Here's what you need:

http://www.whiteensignmodels.com/acatalog/index.html?http%3A//www.whiteensignmodels.com/acatalog/Online_Catalogue_L_Arsenal_110.html&CatalogBody

From L'Arsenal.

IMHO:

I bought three packs of 4 to get the 10 you need. It probably cost around $ 30.00.

I've built up most of one of them in a couple of hours, except for the PE which remains. I cannot understand the instructions, and photos are really hard to read from to get what the manuf. was trying to achieve. I'm glad you posted, because I hadn't seen the foto on the attached page but it's the best guide yet!

At this point the original kit guns are looking pretty good!

One other beef- none of the AM stuff I bought includes one thing that really needs to be replaced- the searchlight mast. I'm going to try to scratchb.

Question for the experts- what color are these popguns? Deck blue, sea blue? gray? Trumpeter is as usual no help and Steelnavy doesn't seem to have that level of detail.

The San Francisco Damage report I posted has a picture or two that might be of use, particularly Photo 32.

WoW! That damage report was really interesting in a morbid sort of way. That must've been one hell of a night for the crew of the SanFrancisco. I'm so glad I wasn't there. Its interesting though that a practically officer less crew managed to keep the ship afloat and survive that battle with what looked to be exceptional damage control. What a pounding!!!

Interesting my butt! Officers are good guys to be sure, and have their place in the overall  scheme of things. The real guys who run a ship are the enlisted chief petty officers. They have the real nuts and bolts knowledge on how to get things done at sea. And the enlisted guys in the US Navy are intelligent, well trained and innovative. That is a trait of all of the US armed forces.

I'm from the government and I'm here to help.

SubFix you are right; the Battle of Guadalcanal was an instance where the Officers of CA-38 fought their ship hard and gave more than they got, even though they hit a friendly.

Guys my post was not to cast aspersions on anyone, Pardon me if I mispoke. My point was to emphasize what a heroic action it was on everyones part in saving the ship and survivors in spite of the damage.

I think throughout the war the decks on all ships were a Dark blue color to match the ocean.

You think incorrectly. There were many colors throughout the war:

1941:

5-D Dark Gray

5-S Sea Blue

Maybe even some 5-N Navy Blue

1942:

20-B Deck Blue

250N Blue Flight Deck Stain

1943

20-B Deck Blue

#21 Flight Deck Stain on carriers

1944

camouflaged deck patterns on many ships

#21 Flight Deck stain (revised) on carriers (similar to 20-B in appearance)

1945:

Deck Gray #20

True and sorry, Tracy: The 5" gun kits for CA-38 are a challenge. Reference to an earlier post: what is 5-N, what is 20-B in late 42, or are the entire mounts grey, which seems to be what pics show?
