They are both available from Skywave in 1/700, and if you want really low-cost/minimal detail, there are still a few of the old 1/700 Albatross Sumner and Gearing kits to be found, probably around $10.

Basically, yes.  The Gearing was developed from the Sumner.  The Gearing added something like 14 feet of length to the Sumner.  The space was largely used for more fuel resulting in longer range -- a necessity in the Pacific.  The added length also improved the sea-keeping capabilities. 

A Sumner hull is also basically a Fletcher,  but just a bit wider (less than a foot).

Wasn't the Sumner the last double-ended destroyer class?  I forget.

Is a Sumner class DD basically the Same as a Gearing class just shorter correct?? I am looking for just basically the look of the Gearing class DD, it is for my Father in Law who is 76 y/o so super accuuracy I wont really need. Thanks in Advance
