did the deck planks on the pennsylvania class battleships butt each other or were they staggered?  thanks for your answer, Hank support the troops  garry owen

In general the joints of the deck planking were staggered, and in a random way.

Random? Staggering - or "shift of butts" to give the correct term - is far from random and usually follows very strict patterns, depending  on the length of plank available. A "normal" shift would be six feet or more and with a "normal" plank (20 -30 feet) would give a three- or four-butt shift.
