Random? Staggering - or "shift of butts" to give the correct term - is far from random and usually follows very strict patterns, depending  on the length of plank available. A "normal" shift would be six feet or more and with a "normal" plank (20 -30 feet) would give a three- or four-butt shift.

In general the joints of the deck planking were staggered, and in a random way.
