Not exactly ship modelling but still a maritime topic
Posted by kapudan_emir_effendi on Wednesday, September 2, 2009 4:03 PM

Greetings,

I hope I am not violating the forum rules with this message. Some members of our community (like Professor Tilley) who know me for more than three years may remember that I was struggling to finish my master's degree dissertation about naval history. I am happy to tell that I finally succeeded after a really hard three years beset by medical and methodological problems. Nevertheless, in large part thanks to my thesis advisor, I managed to organize the topic into a more or less coherent 200 page text complete with tables, pictures and charts. The title is "Iron Ships and Iron Men: Naval Modernization in the Ottoman Empire, Russia, China and Japan 1830-1905". So far, there were a fair number of good monographical studies of both these empires' navies during the great adventure of Industrial Revolution; but as far as I could track, there wasn't an analysis from a comparative perspective. I tried to open a little window in that direction as much as my intellectual capacity did allow me. My text is currently in my university's editorial service for technical purification. After that it will be officially received on September 15. As soon as it gets received, I'll put the pdf. text into the public (internet) space to be downloaded freely (I wrote in English). I hope it shall be helpful for somebody at sometime.

Greetings:

Congratulations again! I remember writing my thesis for my Master's of Science degree. My school for an extra charge offered to publish mine which I took them up on it. Did you have to defend your thesis in front of your advisor and your peers like I had to? Once again I know how hard it is to do one and it is something to be proud of the rest of your life. You also get to say I wrote that book I always wanted to. Well done sir!

Sincerely

Michael Lacey

Kapudan, heartiest congratulations on the completion of your thesis!  I know you've had more than your fair share of difficulties getting it done; you must feel like an enormous load has been lifted from your shoulders.

I'll look forward to reading it on the web.  And it sounds as though the topic is eminently publishable; I hope you're able to interest a publisher in it.

Again, warmest congratulations.

Youth, talent, hard work, and enthusiasm are no match for old age and treachery.

Dear Forum members,

I'm happy to greet you all after a rather long interval. I'm happy to report that on September 15 my thesis get accepted with full honors and a few other scholars who read it expressed more or less positive arguments. I'd like to give the news earlier but rather big and pleasant changes in life prevented me doing so up to now. Since 1.5 months I'm living in Odessa, Ukraine; learning Russian and preparing for further studies in Russian archives.

I'd like to give an upload link for those who would like to read my thesis however as I'm totally computer disabled I don't where to upload. You shall send me e-mail or if somebody would volunteer to put it into download site I'd be glad.

Cheers from Ukraine.

Congratulations upon completing all that hard work and having it accepted. I'm sure it feels like a great weight has been removed from your shoulders. As we say on the forum Make a Toast [#toast]Make a Toast [#toast]Make a Toast [#toast] and then Party [party]Party [party]Party [party].

Dear forum members, thank you all for your support and good wishes. As I always say, without such a wave of goodwill I couldn't finish my thesis. Thanks again !
