CV 33 Kearsarge conversion
Posted by stenscience on Thursday, October 22, 2009 3:10 PM

Hi all,

I am just back into the hobby, so I have a lot of questions. Everyone has been very helpful;much appreciated.

One of my projects is to make a model of the carrier Kearsarge (CV 33) as she looked during 1947-8, when my Dad was aboard as a pharmacist's mate. I ordered the Trumpeter 1/700 Ticonderoga to use as a starting point. It looks, from the illustration, pretty similar. The two things I would like advice on are:

1. Aircraft-I understand that the K carried Hellcats and Avengers during that time.I would like to put some 1/700 models on deck in folded wing configuration. Does anyone have any recommendations for aftermarket kits good for that?

2. Decals-The K had a big 33 on the forward part of the flight deck. It was, at the time, shaded inside and outlined with white. Any tips on reasonable ways to get this?I know this was discussed in some threads a couple of years ago;I wonder if there are current decal sets available that fit the bill.

And of course, any other tips would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Stenscience

Cyber Hobby makes a set that includes Avengers, Hellcats and Helldivers in 1/700.  Sprue Brothers has them:

There may be others available.

Can't help you with the numbers.

Thank you very much, sir. That is exactly what I was looking forApprove [^].I think I can work through the decal issue myself, but the planes were a big issue. Many thanks.

TLAI Enterprises offers a TrueType computer font for the carrier deck numerals

These are not shareware and must be purchased.  However you may be able to examine the font, line width, and spacing to come up with a mask to paint your own.  Go here for the copyright image example

Trumpeter also offers sets of 1/700 naval aircraft - covering just about every major American type from the 1930s to the present.  They're molded in clear plastic; the modeler paints everything but the canopies.  And I believe the types with folding wings have the outer wing panels molded separately.  Squadron Mail Order is one of the many companies that sell them:  http://www.squadron.com/SearchResults.asp?offset=0

Gold Medal Models offers a set of decals for WWII American carrier decks.  I'm not sure it would have everything you need - or be better the TLAI product - but here's a link to it:  http://www.goldmm.com/ships/gmsdusac.htm .

Hope that's of some use.  Good luck.

Thanks for the info jtilley,

The Trumpeter 1/700 Ticonderoga kit arrived a couple of days ago, but i did not open it until yesterday. I was suprised and pleased to find that a box of aircraft were already included. I still ordered the additional aircraft kit mentioned, because the ones included with the carrier do not have folded wings, and I really don't want to try to modify such a small scale aircraft without backups (I am concerned that I would lose too much wing in the cutting process. I am going to order the decal sets you suggested;it is a pain that you have to use snail mail, but I have the time.

Question:I need to make the decision as to whether to make the full hull or waterline.I know it is a personal choice, but I am open to suggestions and thoughts. This will be my first ship model in many years and I have never done a waterline model. The Trumpeter kit includes both options with a display stand for the full hull model and a transparent blue base for the waterline model. I wonder if it is possible to do the waterline model first, then add the lower hull if I find that I do not like the looks of it?

EdGrune, Thanks for the info on the font program. I think I will go with the decal sets mentioned by jtilley, as they include the aircraft markings and whatnot. If I go the font download way,the total cost will likely be too much.Thank anyway for the tip, much appreciated

being this is your 1st ship model in years then leave it full hull until you get somewhat comfortable with doing model ships again. i have only 1 waterline 1/700 model which came from ebay. the description said 1/600 on ebay but wasn't in reality.

Just remember one thing above all others, stenscience - don't get too hung up about the screw ups. Because you will screw up. There is no such thing as a perfect model. Do as good a job as you can do, just getting back into the hobby - and then step back. I, for one, have found that I generally cause more damage trying to go back and fix the mistakes than if I had left them alone in the first place, especially since the vast majority are things that 99 out of 100 people aren't going to notice anyway.

Good luck with your project!
