Just remember one thing above all others, stenscience - don't get too hung up about the screw ups. Because you will screw up. There is no such thing as a perfect model. Do as good a job as you can do, just getting back into the hobby - and then step back. I, for one, have found that I generally cause more damage trying to go back and fix the mistakes than if I had left them alone in the first place, especially since the vast majority are things that 99 out of 100 people aren't going to notice anyway.

The Trumpeter 1/700 Ticonderoga kit arrived a couple of days ago, but i did not open it until yesterday. I was suprised and pleased to find that a box of aircraft were already included. I still ordered the additional aircraft kit mentioned, because the ones included with the carrier do not have folded wings, and I really don't want to try to modify such a small scale aircraft without backups (I am concerned that I would lose too much wing in the cutting process. I am going to order the decal sets you suggested;it is a pain that you have to use snail mail, but I have the time.

Question:I need to make the decision as to whether to make the full hull or waterline.I know it is a personal choice, but I am open to suggestions and thoughts. This will be my first ship model in many years and I have never done a waterline model. The Trumpeter kit includes both options with a display stand for the full hull model and a transparent blue base for the waterline model. I wonder if it is possible to do the waterline model first, then add the lower hull if I find that I do not like the looks of it?

 EdGrune, Thanks for the info on the font program. I think I will go with the decal sets mentioned by jtilley, as they include the aircraft markings and whatnot.If I go the font download way,the total cost will likely be too much.Thank anyway for the tip,much appreciated

Trumpeter also offers sets of 1/700 naval aircraft - covering just about every major American type from the 1930s to the present.  They're molded in clear plastic; the modeler paints everything but the canopies.  And I believe the types with folding wings have the outer wing panels molded separately.  Squadron Mail Order is one of the many companies that sell them:  http://www.squadron.com/SearchResults.asp?offset=0

Gold Medal Models offers a set of decals for WWII American carrier decks.  I'm not sure it would have everything you need - or be better the TLAI product - but here's a link to it:  http://www.goldmm.com/ships/gmsdusac.htm .

TLAI Enterprises offers a TrueType computer font for the carrier deck numerals

These are not shareware and must be purchased.  However you may be able to examine the font, line width, and spacing to come up with a mask to paint your own.  Go here for the copyright image example

Cyber Hobby makes a set that includes Avengers, Hellcats and Helldivers in 1/700.  Sprue Brothers has them:
