I am a goldsmith, and spend up to 11 hours a day behind an optivisor.  The working position is usually hunched over, putting a lot of strain on your neck.  I also am exposed regularly to heat from small torched close to the face, polishing compounds, and other eye irritants.  It's a bit strange that it has taken this long to notice the discomfort!

What sort of job do you do, out of interest?

Just that headaches, blurred vision and light spots are all symptoms of eye strain. Staring at the same distance such as working with computers and *cough* modelling could easily cause it. So could staring at bright screens, such as computers, TVs and cinema in dark rooms.

Oh and dry eyes can cause blurred vision which may translate to eye strain and therefore headaches.

In the past I've had blood vessels in my eye pop just from the above. Lubricating eye drops help a lot.

I saw the eye doctor last Friday, and was given the whole test battery.  YIKES!  What a PITA.  My eyesight was still perfect, reading 20/15 even with them dilated.  So, they didn't find anything.  I called and set up an appt with my regular doctor, and shall begin looking for something else causing it.  After speaking with a couple of others who are in the same line of work, I am wondering if it may be a pinched nerve or something like that.  Still, thank you for beginning this thread to make all of us aware of what could happen!

Thanks for the heads up on this!!!!!!!!!!! I'm in Thailand and at age 61 I'm seeing my eyes do goopy stuff they never did before. There is dust in the air in my condo and once I got a super wicked infection from having the fan on my face all night. I wear glasses and not contacts or things might be worse. Now a days I keep eyedrops on hand, wash my face more often, never leave the fan on my face and also keep some of the medicine I used to cure things on hand for occasional use. The whites of my eyes got so watery and swollen you would have thought I would be blind forever, but it all came back after some time. Halleluja and thanks again, Paul

How does this work?

Glad to hear all is well.  Keep the contacts clean so no eye infection sets in.

Glad to hear you are all right, I have similar issues with my left eye at the moment. I recently had LASIK and they mangled that eye. So I am back onto a Steroidal anti-inflammatory.

Love how they've bundled everything involving inflammation into one messy group, really makes everything crystal clear.

Glad to hear that your eye is back to normal. Sounds like the doctor knew his stuff after all. Yes

Great news. Glad to hear all will be well. If I had one of those 110 year old bottles of scotch I would raise a glass to you!

UPDATE: I got my left eye back in OEM condition all is well, howevernow my wallet is now in pain, all red on the inside and NOT swellling.

Kidding aside, Insted of wearing my contact for a month at a time like they are designed for, we decided to do the change out weekly.  I don't have to disgard them, just soak them over night in the solution for at least a day to clean.

Hope things are healing for you.

I've never heard of Eye Arthritis.  However, your symptoms are exactly what I experienced several years ago.  I was referred to an opthomologist.  In my case it led to a bacterial infection causing corneal ulcers.  After treatment all was fine until three years later it started all over again resulting in another bacterial infection that ate through my left cornea resulting in my having a corneal transplant.  After all was said and done I was diagnosed as having Blepharitus (aka eyelid acne) - an affliction where the sweat and tear ducts on and near the eyelids become clogged and can become infected resulting in problems (a yellowish pus forms in the eyes).

I would strongly recommend you get checked out by an opthomologist and see if there is any bacterial (or virus-caused) infection involved.  Believe me, you don't want to go through what I went through!

Thanks for posting that link Jake. I know there are quite a few here who are in the "arhtritis ages". Personally mine is in my neck, but I had never heard of it in the eyes. Making people aware of it's existence is an important step. It sounds like your post has already alerted one person to go see a doctor. My hat is off to you for using your own problem to alert the rest of us. The best of luck to you and a quick recovery!

Good luck Jake. Things don't look better by next week, get a second opinion. Hope all goes well.

Hi Frank,

I went to see my regular optometrist,  He does not seem that worried yet, so I'm not worried yet. Dr, Mueller is about 45 or so and seems to know his stuff.  I've done a bit of reserach on the subject tonight.

Jake-

I saw this posted on the front page, and was intrigued as I have been experiencing similar symptoms for a while.  The blurred vision, spots, headaches, etc.  Did you see your regular doctor, or an optometrist?

I whish you luck with the eye arthritis.

With the eye patch, mabe you can use that as insperation to get and build a few pirate ship kitsWink (weak attempt at humor. It didn't do that much)

Good Luck Jake.

Eye Arthritis
Posted by Big Jake on Friday, August 6, 2010 7:04 PM

Over the last 3 days my left eye has been giving me some problems (dry eye) I wear contacts and have been wetting the eye for a few days removing the contact, and giving it a rest. Over night the eye really reddened terribly I went to the doctor this morning and got quite a shock.

I was diagnosed with Eye Arthritis. I'd never heard of that before in my life. I have to take drops of something called prednisolone (Steroid) every two hours until Monday at 2:00pm.

http://ezinearticles.com/?Eye-Arthritis---Can-It-Be-Prevented?&id=714138

It has several telltale symptoms. These include blurred vision, eyes that become red or bloodshot quickly, light sensitivity or photophobia, seeing floating spots in front of the eyes, or general aches and pains surrounding the eyes. Eye arthritis can be tricky to diagnose because the symptoms are not generally manifested during its early stages.

I asked the doctor if things were going to turn out Ok and as of now, he does not think it will be a problem, however, I may end up taking oral steroids for a while to knock it completely out. I can still see good out of my right eye, but wearing a patch over the left one is sure different. I feel like a Pirate, which I suppose in kind of fitting ;)

I should and hope to be back to normal next week, right now I look like a one eye Dracula.

Jake
