Thanks Bondoman,

I've seen photo's of the Varyag.  That would be a fun build.  Looks like there are several kits you can purchase for it as well.  I visited the Arizona memorial back in 90 and bought the old Revell kit there, so I'm going to start that one next.

Thanks

Fantastic! Nicely displayed as well. Plastic ship models from the pre-dreadnought era are hard to come by, and this one is very nicely built. You should look for a Varyag from Zvezda as a subject.

Finally had a chance to complete the project.  At least I'm calling it done.  I also decided I needed to have a case to protect the ship so I built that as well.  I feel pretty good about the results.  Afterall I handn't built anything in close to 20 years.

Here are the final pictures.

Thanks, Gregg

Last week I was driving my son and a friend to a BB game.  On the way my son threw the front seat forward....right on top of the model.   Fortunately, the damage was repairable.  But since that time I had a few other unfortunate turns.  The second jar of tan paint was a slightly different color and I didn't notice until after I had glued some of the detail onto the deck.  I don't have the best lighting to work with.

All in all I'm pretty happy with results so far.

Haven't painted the barrels or anchors yet.  I have some line for the rigging, chain the PE has some generic block & tackles I thought I'd add to the small lifts.

I tore into the turrets to replace the barrels.  I used some plastic tubing and spaced them apart enough to get the same barrel seperation.  The holes for the 8 in guns are bigger than Id like but I think it will be ok.  The tubing for the main guns were smaller than the barrels so I drilled them out with a 5/32 bit.  worked well I think.  All in all I feel good about the mounting of the barrels.  Almost done with them.[View:/themes/fsm/utility/:550:0]

here I drilled the 8in gun from the top to remove the turrets.  Worked better than anticipated.

Checking the alignment of the barrels.

[View:/themes/fsm/utility/:550:0]

For the main barrels I used some extra plastic to be sure the barrels were parallel and sitting at the same height while the glue dries.   Drilling out the tubing to a larger size wasn't a perfect job so I needed something to ensure the barrels were parallel and aligned.

Repaired the holes in the top of the turrets and changed the position of the top detail.  Just guessing but those details on top look like they may be used to aim the weapons.  Anyone know?  Closeups of photos show vertical and horizontal slits in them.

I guess you need to determine how much of the brass barrel is inside the turret and therefore how much you have to work with. I don't know what the inside of the turret looked like, but ships of that ilk typically had a big cast/ machined slide block, a single bar through which the multiple barrels fit in holes, and coordinated their movement.

If you have any length at all, make a block with a pair of holes and glue the barrels into the holes. Sometimes that piece ends up tight behind the front glacis plate of the turret.

I could use some help.  Xmas brought me the brass barrels for the Oregon.  The barrels have a flat end.  How do I mount the barrels and ensure they are lined up?  One post on another site refered to a pin in the end of the brass barrel being used.  These barrels do not have that pin or a hole to mount one.

From  what I have seen this building is going good for you.  I like these reference photos being posted.   I have always wanted to build the Oregon (BB3) but cannot find the kit anywhere.  If anyone knows where I can find one please let me know.  Keep up the good work.  I need to find a club so I can find out some tricks, tips, and motivation.  I just have not found the time yet to do it.

Here's a shot of the ship in drydock.  All the turrests have what looks like range finding cupolas on top.  Closer looks show horizontal and vertical slits in them.

I keep referring back to Marco's build.  Now after looking over some of the photo's of the Oregon I see a few things he missed that I'll make sure go in.  Really thinking about changing the tops of the turrets also.  I just haven't quite figured out how to accomplish it yet.

I'm really pleased with the bridge.  If I had tried to measure things out I couldn't have made it any closer.

Just post the image code from Photobucket in your post and your images will show up after you submit them. Much easier than using the Insert Media utility and much cleaner. They wont however show up in the preview of your post but rest assured when you submit it they will be there. Also, once they are in your photobucket account, if you move them around or "organize" them, any previous links to the photos will no longer function. HTH!

The build is looking good. The scratch work and PE really look super!

I've actually never done PE before.  This is my first.  Looked a bit daunting to me but I think it came out pretty good.  The center walk bridge has steps that I made from two sets. Needed 11 steps and the the PE doesn't come with that.  The Bridge and mast I'm pretty proud of.

Since my pictures are now showing up I'll start posting more.  Honestly, I don't know why pics weren't showing up!

If one picture works maybe the others will.  I'm pretty much done with the PE parts I'm going to do.  Just cleaning up other parts before I paint.  I'd also like to get a coat of pain on the superstructure.

Not sure whats going on but I've had way to much trouble getting pictures to come up.  Here's one of the superstructure that I've cut up.  The white parts are ones I've made or changed.

To all.... I appologize for the lack of pictures.  I don't understand why every effort ends in failure.

The white pieces are the changes I've made.  The whole mid deck was removed and replaced as well as the bridge deck.

[View:/themes/fsm/utility/:550:0]

The hull lost the bull nose edge it had by the time I was able to achieve a decent joint between the deck and the hull.  I added it back with a half round I found at the hobby store.

[View:/themes/fsm/utility/:550:0]

I'm still working on getting the super structure to fit well with the deck.  Might just remove the bull nose there as well and replace it.

Check out the earlier post for that build.  They are Z scale mechanics I believe.

I think you might have missunderstood.  The photos your looking at are from another gentleman.  I've listed his web site build earlier.  Didn't want anyone to think this was all my ideas.  Having not built a model in years I went looking for some help.  A friend thinks I'm doing a job that is worthy of posting.  If mine comes close to Marcos I'll be pretty happy.

On your personal note: I'd be proud as well.  Have you been able to tour or ride a sub?  My brothers step son spent his time on a boomer monitoring the reactor but he didn't do anything to get anyone a tour.  However My grandfather who died in '89 had a grand tour of the "Graf Spee" during the prohibition.  He was even served a beer while given the tour.  His neighbor was german and the Graf Spee was in Seattle so the two went to see it.  Just so happend that the officer of the day was from the same town as grampa so he gave them the tour.  Grampa said they saw everything.  Captains quarters to engine room.
