Bernie,

Both the Zvezda 'Acheron' (Portugese Frigate Dom Fernando Il e Gloria) and the La Flore have been discussed in some detail on here, so if you haven't seen the threads...

Acheron/ Dom Fernando.

La Flore.

have fun. All kits have the potential to be serious scale models, but I have a particular soft spot for the D. Fernando kit.

Gentlemen (& other ranks!!  Big Smile ),

Thanks for the info - all most interesting.

I'm looking forward to starting & hopefully detailing this model - however I've currently got "Acheron" sitting on the shelf half-built, plus waiting for "La Flore" to arrive, so it's going to be some time yet!

Regards,

Bernie

This sounds like the same kit I have.  You can read more on it from this post link.

I can't address your model specifically, but machine tool technology and metrology has advanced light years since that model was built. That is not to say that the lastest moulds are always the best. It depends on the QC and tool & mould makers of the manufacturer.

It seems to me that increased competition amongst the model manufacturers, the startlingly high standards and skills of the model-building community generally and their demand for quality has raised the bar.

(Post Script: I responded to your post even though it was addressed to "gentlemen". There remains some question as to whether or not I qualify for that appellation. Dunce )

USS Constitution Model - Question
Posted by BernieS on Saturday, November 13, 2010 12:56 PM

Gentlemen,

I have just acquired the following from eBay:

Revell Germany USS Constitution - the box states a © date of 1980.  The © notice on the instructions does not specify a date, just a code: H-5600-3800.  The code on the box is also 5600.

No scale is given, however the kit is stated as being 22" long.  This is obviously the length over the bowsprit as the hull length is 16.5".  The main deck has the cannon carriages moulded on, as does the gundeck.  The latter however, is short, holding just 10 cannon.  This means that the hull has five gun ports open per side, with the rest being moulded shut.

From a recent thread here, I am assuming that this is one of the "Quick Build" series that Revell brought out, however I would appreciate some confirmation & detail on that.

I deliberately bought a 30 year old model as I hoped that, having been produced on moulds which are 30 years younger than todays, there would be better detail & less flash.  Well, the detail looks just fine, however I have several evenings work ahead of me removing flash & moulding points before I can even begin to think about putting bits together!!  Tongue Tied

Thanks,

Bernie
