Is there a good 1/350 ship kit that will be cheap, be good quality, and take a long time to build?

Academy Oilver Perry Frigate, Dragon USS Bunker Hill or Academy Bismark.

Any 1:350 major (battleship/carrier/heavy cruiser) ship kit is a long build compared to other genre of modeling.

But OP also has the forty dollar limit - so that puts the kaibosh on most of those subjects.

Let me throw the Trump USS England or the newer Dragon destroyers into the list.   Depending on where you shop the latter may just come in under budget while the former is available in your price range at most online shops

How about the Bounty or the Endeavor?  Both three masters, so they will certainly take awhile to rig, especially if you discard the shroud jig and do the shrouds and ratlines in situ (which come out much better than ones done on jig).

Hobby Lobby had 1/350 trumpteter USS North Carolina for $47 and USS Lexington for $59 on clearance.  Were available at multiple Hobby Lobby's so might be worth checking out your local one but who knows if they still have any left in stock.
