Guides for Rigging Masted Sailing Ships
Posted by dogbone on Friday, February 11, 2011 2:23 AM

Hindsight being 20/20, after building two large scale plastic model masted sailing ships (Old Ironsides, and HMS Victory) I have a much better feel of what not to do on future kits, like gluing in the masts before rigging.

I recently read Frank Mastini's book, Ship Modeling Simplified.  Of great interest and value for future builds were Part III, Masting and Rigging, and Part IV, Finishing Her Up.  The book was definitely easy to read and understand vice some other books that I have thumbed through that are packed with information but also so confusing (for me) to understand and be able to apply it.  Yes, I classify myself still a novice (green horn; wet behind the ears) masted ship builder.

My questions to the forum is, "Are there other books out there you can recommend that you believe a novice such as myself could use that is not too confusing, to continue learning how to build and rig my collection of plastic model sailing ships, better?"

Thanks a bunch in advance.  dogbone

I'll just make a general comment.  There should be very little difference between rigging a good plastic sailing ship model and a wooden model.  Therefore, you do not need to look for a book on rigging plastic ship models- any book on rigging sailing ship models is fine.  I know it is very old, but I believe Richard Mansir did one. I will see if I can find it- can't put my finger on it right now.

Two very good books are:

1. The Art of Rigging by George Biddlecombe

2. The Rigging of Ships in the Days of the Spritsail Topmast, 1600-1720 by R.C. Anderson

Both are published by Dover Publications, www.doverpublications.com

warshipguy is right!  Two of the best  StarStarStarStarStar  Rigging Period Ship Models is the best of all for details on HMS ship of the line, but could be used as a general guide for any ship.

Amazon has it

In addition to Bill's mentioned books, i want recomend two more good books:

Lennarth Peterssen - Rigging Period Ship Models

Karl Heinz Marquardt - Bemastung und Takelung von Schiffen des 18. Jahrhunderts

All four books (Bill's mentioned and mine) are my favorites in rigging.

Another good book is The Young Sea Officer's Sheet Anchor. The book is written for 1:1 ship rigging. It is full of excellent illustrations. The hard cover version has  what looks like scrimshaw let in to the front cover.

Now that we have the references, perhaps the manufacturers will sit up and take notice that we sailing ship modelers need new kits, too!  Oh well, I have been chanting that mantra for years now.  I guess its time to contact Airfix again!
