Trying to locate a Revell Thermoplae Sailing Ship Model
Posted by JCon on Friday, January 23, 2004 10:26 PM
Question [?]Has anyone seen a large scale Revell Thermoplae Sailing Ship Model available anywhere? I built one of these in the 80's and my son would like a kit of it to go with his Cutty Sark he is finishing up. I have looked but to no avail... thanks for your help and God bless you, JoeCool [8D]

JCon,

They have been our of production for about 20 years. The reason is because the ship was not as well known as the Cutty Sark and it was not selling as well. Revell of Germany just re-released it I think. But Ebay has them on there from time to time. below are a few links to check out. If you go to a bid high of $75.00 thats a fair price, so expect it to go for that much, but you might get it cheaper, The new ones sell for 80.00. But logic dictates that I would rather spend 80.00 on new then 75.00 on old.

I have the Ther. and will build it like the Barque. I have also wrote an instruction manual to help modelers build the CS but it will also help the themop. builders, as the same rules and techniques apply. email off bb and I will send it to you.

The first two models are the large 1/96th. scale version,. The next one is the 1/220th scale version. Thermo. was not a true sister of the CS but they were similar is design. The main differance is the following.

Figure head (Roman Centurian)
After hatch (instad of deck house)
Poop deck deck house ( CS had a sharper design)
The main hull color was a meduin green.
You can build the model as a SHIP or a BARQUE It come with both options in all the models kits.

I bought one on ebay last September. There were about 6 on at the same time so I got mine, with slight box damage, for $36.00. Buy when the quantities are high, then the prices are lower. I like the Therm because I think she was more colorful than the CS. I use metalic oils such as gold and turquiose mixed into the green that gives a deep, rich, irredescent look that really makes the ship stand out in a display.

Revell re-leased the Pedro Nunes for a short time in the 90's. The Nunes was the Thermopolae after she was turned into a training ship, so the kits are the same. However, I havn't seen the Nunes go below $100.00 on ebay since it is a rare kit compared to the Ther and CS.

Jake, how can I get a copy of your CS article?
