Allo, mine frent! How the heck are ya? As to the corvette_ I have the old REVELL release AND the older MATCHBOX version too. Both have undergone many changes to be correct.I had a friend who visited the one in CANADA and send me scads of photos

.

The REVELL one has been modified for R.C. and except for the slightly larger rudder and screw ,most folks don,t know she,s R.C

.

I kept ALL the kit stuff and carefully built it for the scale look and good operation in mind.I will admit,I didn,t know much about P.E.at the time so neither ship has any.Just a lot of scratch built stuff instead.

I will have to check this new one out. There was a version with a squarer stern like the one in CANADA and I might do that exact one,in R.C. of course.I still can,t stay away from stuff that floats.HMMM. TANKER-builder.

She does look pretty good there, be a nice addition along side one of the 1/72 U-boats. Have you heard that Trumpeter is coming out with the Bismark in 1/200?

David,

If you can find an old Imai, Lee or Aoshima 1/100 scale Spanish Galleon that would be your best bet.  Although it is not 3 feet long, it actually looks like what a galleon could have looked like.  Beautiful molding and on mine, no flash, excellent fit are just two of the selling points.

Don,

I was about to post that same observation!  But, I will have to get this kit as well!

Bill

I unfortunately bought the old version a year or so ago.  Havent started building it yet, was gathering aftermarket stuff and reference material.  Anyone want to buy the bare kit?  Anyone know what sort of price they will ask for the new version?

Ugh!  You know, I got excited when I saw it, then I began to look more closely at stock photos.  I could tell it resembled a smaller scale Galleon kit they produced in the old days, but I hoped that this was a wholly different product.  I can now see that the design and detail are lacking, and it doesn't seem so great (looks pretty sloppy, actually)....And you're right....the Sterncastle looks way too big and blocky....

Thanks for the heads-up!

It's was too good to be true...shame that my visual taste in ship kits is under-represented in the market.

I'd love to find a dramatic-looking Galleon-type ship, of a (as you said) 3-foot size, designed well, made with decent-quality molds, and that will challenge me and reward my efforts with satisfaction and beauty.

So far, the only ships I've fallen in love with are the Wasa, and the Swan...the latter of which is the closest I've found to what I want to build so far, despite it's various subjective shortcomings.

And I realize this fits better on a different active thread, but I was considering that I may not be prepared to begin the HECEPOB (!) Berlin for some time, and I hope to find another plastic kit that suits my fancy in the meantime....but they are few.

Did those ships really have a wooden deck?  I thought they were steel decks.

I saw that announcement of the "Spanish galleon" too.  It's actually a reissue of a kit from the late sixties or early seventies.  I'll stick out my neck and say that, in my opinion, it's the lousiest sailing ship kit Revell has ever produced.

It originates from a time when the entire American plastic model industry was in a mess; pundits were saying that the day of the American plastic model was almost over.  Aurora, Renwall, and several other companies had just gone out of business, and Monogram had been taken over by Mattel Toys, which virtually abandoned the concept of scale modeling.  (There were no new Monogram models of actual objects except cars for at least five years.)  The "Spanish galleon" was a desperate effort to keep the big, 3-foot sailing ship kit alive.  According to Dr. Thomas Graham's excellent book on the history of Revell, the "research" was done by one of Revell's airplane specialists (I suspect there were no ship specialists in the firm at that time) in the library of the MGM movie studios.  'Nuff said.  It bears no resemblance to anything that ever floated; the proportions of the hull and sterncastle are impossible.  (I question whether an object shaped like that and made out of wood would float.)  The spar proportions are also wrong for the period, and the rigging diagrams are a sorry joke.

I was working in a hobby shop with this thing appeared, and I vividly remember the promotional brochure for it:  "We've zeroed in on the market with this one:  young married couples and interior decorators."  Note the lack of reference to ship modelers.

My advice on this one:  avoid at all costs.

Youth, talent, hard work, and enthusiasm are no match for old age and treachery.

Thanks for the link!  I followed it to a *new releases* page, and found that Revell is also releasing a 1/96 Spanish Galleon kit!!!!  No surprise that I like the galleon-style ships, and this one looks big and fun to build! I've got my eyes on it...with great interest!!

Also, did you notice the sweet DaVinci replicas?  Hooray for Revell!

All in one box, fabulous.

I read  "The Cruel Sea" in 5th grade in 1959 and always could imagine being on the deck of a Flower Class.

Modeling is an excuse to buy books.

This kit has always had a loyal following... The turnbuckles are the big aha for me - wonderful detail!

Interesting future release from Revell Germany

Here's a link to an interesting item I just stumbled upon on the Revell Germany website:  http://www.revell.de/?id=1012&L=1

It pretty clearly is the old Matchbox 1/72 kit, with brass gun barrels, photo-etched details, and a wood deck.  Take a look at that boathook hanging on the bulkhead.  And the sights on the 20mm guns.  And the turnbuckles on the railings.  And the gun shield on the main gun appears to be folded up from a photo-etched part.  And it looks like they actually got the joggled margin planks and butt joint spacing right.

I may just have to buy this one.  But I hate to think what the price may be.
