I believe the proper term is mooring buoy. An anchor buoy is a float attached to an anchor so you can see where it is underwater. I remember the mooring buoys in the harbors at Malta and Venice being as shown in the pictures. I suppose the design has been around since at least WWI.

I want to display my Dreadnought anchored to an anchor buoy. What did an anchor buoy look like in that time period. If I search google images for anchor buoys I get lots of shapes- if I restrict it to WW1 anchor buoys I don't find many images showing much.
