Help with rudder fabrication please
Posted by Hokey on Monday, November 17, 2014 11:28 AM

Getting ready to build the resin Nautilus from 20K Leagues Under The Sea and lo and behold - missing rudder.  I can make the piece from styrene (I assume I can glue that to resin), BUT I don't know what to do about "creating" rivets.

Attached photo is the rudder piece in place on another's kit.

I saw an ad in "Micro Mark" catalog for raised decals in different scales. Check it out to see if these will work for you.  Hope that this helps.

If I wanted to add rivets, I would try some thick or medium CA on a toothpick. I don't know how large you need them, but you could try that on a scrap piece and see how it works.

Building a kit from your stash is like cutting a head off a Hydra, two more take it's place.

On a related subject, I made mine for Nemo from the heads and short length of straight pins, glued into holes.

Sounds like a good option.

Thx. I'll prolly try this as well as the 3D rivet decals!

I also believe Micro Mark sells a tool you can use to make your own rivets.

Hokey your biggest challenge is that the rest of the fish has rivets all over it and they need to be matched.

Try looking for found things that look the same.

I would not recommend using CA. First, any goofs and they will happen, hard to fix.

And it runs all over.

Try white glue.

In addition to the decal method, you can also make rivet heads from white glue.

Put down a little puddle of white glue on a piece of card stock or styrene.  Dip the end of a toothpick into the puddle, picking up a small amount of glue.  Touch the toothpick on the rudder or other part where you want the first rivet.  Then repeat for a row of rivets.  A small scale laid next to the row will help with spacing.  When painted the little bumps of white glue will look like rivet heads.  If you screw up one of the spots, you can wipe it off with a wet q-tip.

This technique does require a bit of practice to be able to obtain the same size bump each time.  You may want to practice on some scrap stock before committing your scratch rudder to it.

White glue, CA, you get the idea.
