In answer to your question about how I set up the mounting on my ship. Here is as picture of the interior with the nuts attached. How i got there is quite simple. I clamped the two hull halves together (not glued) and measured the the keel to find where i wanted to drill my two holes. Once i marked that off, I drilled through the keel with a regular drill bit....I have said this plastic is thick and tough! I cleaned up the holes and then inserted the bolts I would use through the pedestals and then screwed the nuts down. CAREFULLY, I used expoxy on one half of the underside of the nut and let that dry for a bit before removing the bolts. The nuts are now secured to one half of the hull until I am ready to glue the hull and deck together...... somewhere in the distant future!

You can see the epoxy on the lower part of the hull in the picture. Man, it has been awhile, i had to refigure out how to post here again.

I think I'm going to go with a similar idea...I'll clamp the hull together and drill the holes for the pedestal screws.  I've gone ahead and dremel'd out the sealed hatch opening toward the front of the deck (it gets that hatch cover over it later, anyway)....with that opening, I should be able to access the forward keel area (with some long needle-nose pliers!) to help get the nuts fastened....also, since the lower deck allows access to the aft keel area before the upper deck goes in, that mounting hardware should also be accessible.

I'll do some trial-fitting and see if things will work out...if it seems like I'll run into trouble, I may go ahead and epoxy the nuts on, just to be safe!

Wait, photobucket?  Does that mean you caved and paid the ransom, or that they decided to let everyone's pics back out to hosted sites?

PhotoBucket is actually letting go of the kidnapped/ransomed photos. I am still not paying but all my threads have pictures again! Which is great, because of all the lost knowledge that was ransomed are available again.

However, I am not adding to my folders because I don't trust them. So postimage.com is getting my business for now.

Anyway, I'll be adding photos this week to this thread.

Progress.... well some at least. Got the cleats glued to the the ribs and then glued the bolt heads on. It looks like I am going to have to up my game on painting....

Wow, two updates in one week! If you feel faint, please find a chair before you fall over.

I was able to get some quality time at the bench today and my hands behaved to a degree. So I finished the cleats for the fo’c'sle and they don’t look too bad, if I say so myself … and I do.

I then started on the chainplates and deadeyes. After much deliberations, like a year’s worth and help from various sources, especially kiril4 and the awesome pictures he sent, I have decided to go with my first solution. So using Hearts from Model Shipways I twisted wire, Blackened them and then set them up as follows. I could have tried scratching blocks and rigged them as they are on the actual Mataro model, but for sanity’s sake, I chose this way. Maybe down the road I’ll rerig her but I would really like to finish this.

Of course I'll clean up the small messes before I forge ahead. Thanks for looking.

Your WIP is giving me impetus to look at the ships forum more often. I find it very enjoyable to watch guys like you, Steve5, and David K. tackle sailing ships.

With Yellows, Reds and Oranges, I always prime with Gray. After it cures, then I lay the colors down with thin coats and let them cure in between coats. Takes time, but it is worth it.

Quick update.

I scratched the beam ends that are missing on this model. A bit of Evergreen and paint will make it what it ain't. After this I decided to change my mind on the bolts and will go with nail heads. Stay tuned.

Another update.

I decided that the bolts that I originally thought would look good but after looking at them and thinking about it, I decided I would go with rivet heads. They look like the nail heads that are molded onto the model so that was a plus.

One of the issues with this decision was that the rivets came with the shank, so I needed to remove the head and then place them at their locations. This also will mean doing a boatload of delicate work..... No problem, right????

The first step was to paint them. Each packet came with 120 rivets and it is amazing how 120 tiny rivits could take up so little room.

Next came the actual cutting and I was pleased that I only lost 8 in the cutting phase.

Then placing a tiny drop of CA in each location and placing the rivet head on the strake headsup.....

I figure that it will take about 300 rivits to get 'er done.

The first picture is an old one showing the bolt head I was going with before. All the other photos show the process of my insanity.

There’s a bit of a gap so to speak on this thread. After a marathon session that included working on this 48 hours straight and then a couple more very long days/nights I was able to “finish” this ship. There is more to do to really finish it but I entered her in the Nationals since it was in my backyard. 

I had the honor of having my Catalan Ship next to Rod Millard’s Catalan Ship. Unfortunately we both were skunked by a couple of wooden sailing ships. Rod’s Santa Maria did take best of category in OOB ships!

I was hoping to meet up with Rod, but was unsuccessful.

Anyway, here are the two ships side by side at the Nationals. Mine is the closer of the two. I will post the in between photos once it slows down a bit and I get the finishing touches done.

Personally, I think you should give the Mayflower another crack; however, you might want to see if you can pick up the larger Mayflower that Revell did On evilBay. It’s just an upscale version of the smaller one with all the beautiful detailing. It would give you a bit more room to work with and experiment on with all your great ideas.

I was toying with the idea of posting the progress photos I did take between June and August but there really doesn’t seem that there a real interest in this thread, so I think I’ll just call it done and leave it at that.

I don't blame you for not doing it though. I know what you are saying, and I am losing interest in posting for the same reasons. In my opinion, the ships forum took a big hit when John Tilley passed. He was an anchor that made everyone want to stop in and see what he had to say. I miss him. But--I think in general--all the genres of this site are suffering. There are probably a lot of reasons for this, and few I won't express here. But-- the latest FSM email problem is driving this floundering ship over the edge. They need to fix this and fast. If there is a bright spot that I see, it is that there seems to be lot of people either joining the site or coming back to it. We need more and new life here. 

I love your work, and it is great to see that you are able to push through the pain you deal with. Keep at it Steve.

   If you have a good sprue cutter you do not have to do the sandwich job on the deck to hull join . I usually remove the top rib anyway because it interferes with the scuppers and drain channels .

I so wished we could have met up. I would have loved to have taken you to dinner or at least coffee or tea. 

When I finally entered on Friday, Mike was there with a couple of other modelers. We had a really nice talk and he showed me all the extras he did on his Viking Ship. It was all amazing. 

I was blown away when I saw your Catalan Ship there. I knew it was yours Ins a second. It was even more amazing in person than in the posted pictures. Congratulations on your first place in th OOB with the Santa Maria, I took loads of pictures.

Anyway, hopefully we can meet up at some other Nationals down the roa.
