A long lost liner
Posted by tankerbuilder on Friday, June 5, 2015 3:09 PM

How many of you guys like the older cruise liners ?

I recently found on E - Bay some nice friends . Mainly the ORIANA from the P. and O. shipping line .The Revell kit , Not the illegitimate child but the real thing . It's listed as NIB which means new in box and the seller obviously has more than one .

Collectible price , NO - $25.00 for the ship and $ 11.00 for shipping . Saw  some doozies and prices seemed to be down from this time last year .

TB, I just picked up one of the original 1960's releases of the Oriana just a couple of weeks ago. $30.00 seems about right. There are some people trying to sell the recent release ones for stupid money. Why people don't research their products for sale is beyond me. You just look silly trying to sell a kit for $125.00 when there is another just like it for $25.00. I understand that the motorized version of the Oriana can command some serious money, but like you said...that is a collector price. There is one starry eyed individual (or maybe it's glassy eyed) that has a 1/400 Queen Mary 2 listed for $500.00. Put down the crack pipe and be realistic dude.

It will be interesting to paint an ocean liner yellow as opposed to the black and white scheme we are all used to seeing. This one is way down on my list, but I'll get there.

Matt ;

When I rode on her as a supercargo Chief engineer she was painted a Dark Buff color ( almost Glove Tan  ! ) That's the way I am going to do her  . My next ship to find will be the Moore -Mc-Cormack liner Brasil/Brazil/Argentina -also by Revell .

Is that the one with the green piece of foil for the swimming pool?

I liked that model.

I don't recall seeing green foil in the kit, but the pool water is molded as part of the decking. That's not to say there wasn't any green foil to begin with. The kit I ended up getting has a 1961 date on it and was opened. Pretty much everything survived the 50+ years of garages and attics....even the decals.

When I first opened up the kit, I didn't know what to think of the yellow hull. After a Google search of the Oriana, I came around to liking the color and will definitely be doing it in yellow as well. This kit was molded in a rather odd scale so I should have some fun locating suitable PE railings. They're out there....just gotta find the ones that "work" with this kit. I think it's so cool that you've actually been on the ship, so you have an advantage there. Google can only show us so much....the rest is up for interpretation, for me anyway

I have been on an ocean liner kick lately.....mostly Cunard ships for now, so the Oriana was a neat departure. Now where the hell am I gonna display all these ships? The boss-lady has the final approval so I better get creative. The QM2 is a beast at 1/400....definitely a mantlepiece ship. But then where would my Constitution go? Probably in the bigger house I'll be forced to buy.

TB, you're in luck. There's a vintage S.S. Brasil on eBay right now. The description claims that all is present and accounted for.......except for the "blue foil for the swimming pool" which has deteriorated due to age.

So there's where the foil for the pool comes in.....the Brasil and maybe the sister ship, Argentina, as well. Here's the link:

www.ebay.com/.../271885682668

Hopefully that link works for you. If not, just search for "Revell Brasil 1/400". Act now, though....time is running out! There is also an S.S. Argentina for considerably less....at least for right now, anyway. You have a little time to think that one over. Having trouble with posting the link to that one. It's there, though. The link should pop up when you view the Brasil.

I've got a Brasil. I traded it with a friend for a stack of 1/48 aircraft kits I'll never build. It is complete except for missing one lifeboat davit. It DOES have the blue foil for the swimming pool. I have not decided to build it as a full hull or waterline it. They also have the open side port and ladder down the side which I would close up. The Lindburg President Liner has the same thing. If I waterlined it I might leave the sideport open and have a tender or pilot boat alongside there.

Gosh, when a cruise ship looked like...a ship. These current giant monstrosities come in and out of SF all the time, I have NO desire to go aboard.

Also, memory fails me, I remember the foil as kind of turquoise. I suppose a green swimming pool isn't a good thing!

I recall being told that the Brasil/Argentina were designed by Raymond Loewy, the famous industrial designer who also did the 1950s Studebakers and the Avanti. Also the classic Greyhound buses. Dad had a 1950 Studebaker!

Although there is no mention of that in the wikipeadia entry for him, so maybe I'm wrong.

Whoa......the price for that one Brasil kit on OldModelKits is wild! The one I spotted on eBay was a mere pittance.

This is where I spoted the motorized Oriana for big money.....although, there is one on eBay now for pennies on the dollar.

I don't need to see these kits you guys are posting.....you know I'm weak and will more than likely try and add these to my stash. I blame ALL of you for this "problem" I have.....I'm certainly not to blame.

Ugh. That's a sow's ear. They have a lot of nerve charging more than $4.99 for that.

Now you begin to understand !

I cant stand the idea of a Large hotel built on a motorized barge .! That's what the current crop looks like to me . I abhor the idea of any fixture but the mast and stack/exhausts , Above the bridge .You now have passengers over the bridge -- Wrong , Wrong , Wrong !  back in the day , you had to request a tour to come UP onto the bridge . I just am not comfortable that you can be going down stairs and stumble on to that level.

When passengers on the Shell  Orion wanted to see the bridge . It was done by request , to be approved or denied by the captain ! You know the guy with the pretty gold on his hat UP on the Bridge ! If you were a passenger on the Matson Lines - Lurline , Matsonia , Monterrey and others , you Requested the tour and it was done two days out to Hawaii .

Passengers do not Belong on a bridge except at the consent of the captain ! Now take the ill fated Costa Concordia ! This Behemoth of a Ship ? within 600 feet of shore ! Unthinkable ! Being a show-off for a crew member and folks on shore , brought this captain to prison . And some passengers deceased , Not a good example , Eh Wot !

Now back to the Oriana . Did you know , she was white during the Falklands War ? Yeah , there is a book about her called the Great White Whale ! I liked her mainly because like our famous U.S.S. Bainbridge she had a knuckle in the bow area and all those different decks back aft !

Various features make one like or dislike a ship , I am sure . Myself  , G , I like them to look and act like ships !     T.B.
