Does any one know if U boat torpedoes were bare metal silver or painted? I have seen plenty of black & white photos and some appear to have the warhead painted and the rest bare metal.I can't see them painting them because they going to be exploded quickly but they still have to store them. Maybe they painted them with a rust proof coating?
Hmmm, that’s a good question. I see pics of silver, gold and silver, gold, silver and grey, grey, grey and black, gold and black. I’m not sure you could go wrong here.

I'd say a bare steel body, and obviously has some grease or some similar substance slathered on the exterior for corrosion protection. The warhead is not visible here, but other photos show some bare metal in a differing shade, and some painted in a dark color. Most likely something along the lines if Dark Gray RAL 7021. Or perhaps one of the medium grays used by the DKM.

I am not sure about " U " boats , But the ones on my old ship were Bare metal with a black painted warhead .They would slather the thing with grease and then slide it in the tubes. The little prop on the very tip was kind of a silver color .The grease on the body made them look like very old bronze mixed with silver . T.B.
