Mark,

Good to see you back. I'm looking forward to your thread, I know it will be great. I have the USS Maryland in my stash so I'll be taking notes.

Awesome Spit by the way.

Mark,

I agree that the taping/masking is time consuming but oh so worth it. It is looking great and can I ask what colors and paints you are using? I am in the process of prepping my PT Boat for painting now and was wondering if you have ever used ColourCoats paint. Also, I stated earlier, I have the Maryland in my stash and was trying to get an idea of the colors on the battleships that morning in December.

As always your work is impressive and I never get over the fact that you're working in 1/700 Scale!

Thanks for the comments Steve. Much appreciated. I am using Tamiya and Vellejo Acrylics. Just my preference but I love the ease of these Paints. For the Hull I am usung Vellejo Grau/Blau 71.115 and for the Decks I am using Tamiya XF-78 Wooden Deck Tan. For the Mast Tops any Flat White would be ok. The Anti-Fouling is straight Tamiya Hull Red. I have also completed most of the Sub-Assemblies and are now awaiting their Paint Coat. More to come soon.....Cheers mark

Mark, the model is looking very clean and sharp. I am building my first 1/700 warship and it's hard to do.

As for West Virginias colors, I only follw the discussion about BB-39, a very controversial subject. If she was the same as BB-39, then probably 5-S and the tops were 5-L.

The turret tops are black, black, blue and red.

Modeling is an excuse to buy books.

That is True.  The Colour of the Roof of Turrets 1 and 2 denoted which division she belonged too. The Colour on Turret 4 denoted which division or Squadron her embarked Aircraft belonged too.  That is one Theory and there are probably others also. Therefore at Pearl, West Virginia's Turret 1 and 2 had Black Roofs while Turret 4 had a Red Roof. This should provide you some Answers.....Cheers mark

I have the Hobby Boss 1/700 Arizona, and work on it at times. It's probably similar to your build. It's a tedious little thing, but enjoyable. I'm going with 5-S scheme with red turret tops.
I will be watching this.

Building a kit from your stash is like cutting a head off a Hydra, two more take it's place.

Thanks Steve and have fun doing the Arizona. I can confirm that the Arizona did indeed have Red Turret Tops on Turrets 1,2 and 4. That is what I did my Dragon 1-700 Arizona with....Cheers mark

Mark,

She is looking first rate. A quick question, how difficult were the cage masts to bend and construct?

Thanks Steve. The Cage Masts are not easy as they have to be tapered. I used a Large Brush Handle for the for Cage Mast and a larger one for the Main Cage Mast.....Cheers mark

She's shaping up very well!

I actually enjoy taping up the deck. Tedious, but for some reason I find it fun.

Mark,

Beautiful as usual. You do such great work and thanks for posting the Arizona as a comparison. Your Arizona is beautifully done as well And the rigging is just right.

if you don't mind me asking, did you ever complete the Revell 1/72 Schnellboot you were working on? I have mine on hold after drilling out the holes in the hull and painting the interior black. I was hoping to get some hints from you about the Griffon PE and how you handled some of the more delicate pieces. If you want to send me a PM that's cool because I do not want to hijack your thread.

One thing that I find particularly remarkable is how fast you were able to finish such a fine model! If I could have done it at all (which is questionable) it would have taken me at least a couple of months.

Youth, talent, hard work, and enthusiasm are no match for old age and treachery.
