Hi everyone, being quite the modeling rookie, I have started this kit and must admit I am totally enjoying building it. I do have a few questions please:
When I glued the deck which comes in three parts, do I need to putty in the deck cracks or will the superstructure cover these cracks?
Same question for the floatplane deck which glued to the centre deck... any putty required to cover the cracks?
When I installed the decks, it fit nicely inside the hull and now the deck was painted deck tan and the lip of the hull is grey (colout of kit). Do I need to paint that lip or not worry about it?
The camouflage pattern appears to be detailed for the ship. What do you guys use to cover the hull which is already painted? I am planning to use masking tape.

The 1/350 POW is a nice kit. The deck seams are not totally covered by the superstructure. You can putty them but doing that runs the risk of destroying the wood detail. Depending on how detailed you are willing to go, they make wood decks that lay over the top of the plastic deck. As far as painting the gunnels, I will usually just paint them by hand. The POW did have quite the scheme during Dec 1941 which the Tamiya kit portrays. Silly Putty works well for this. One more thing, I will typically paint ship parts on the tree first, however with such an intricate scheme, I would use the silly Putty or masking tape.

Another technique for dealing with deck seams is to mask both sides of the seam with masking tape as closely to the edges as possible, and then sand the seam until it is gone. The resulting very thin line of where the seam used to be will be virtually invisible under the coat of paint. But, there are some very nice wood deck overlays on the market that will simply cover them up.

Hi Danny, I saw this post and just had to check it out. You see, I had this kit in my stash for quite a few years up until recently when I traded it to someone who really wanted it. I have yet to build a ship model but, this is one I had wanted to build. I'll get another one in due time.
As for tips you were asking about, Yes, Silly Putty would work wonderfully for the camo paint job. I use the stuff all the time for my aircraft camo patterns. A thought on your seam issue might be to get some Perfect Plastic Putty. It is a water soluable putty. If you tape off each side of the seam, fill in with putty and then take a damp cloth or Q-tip and wipe off the excess putty it will leave you with just putty in the seam. Should be little or no need for sanding and this putty does not shrink. I hope that helps.
I would really like it if you would consider posting pics of your work as you build the POW. I would love to see it. Not to mention that I'm about to start on my first ship model and I hope to post it here as a WIP in order to tap into the wealth of knowledge available. I'll be building the Trumpeter 1/700 French battleship Richilieu in it's '46 fit. I'm also building it for the '46 GB.

Hi everyone, it's been another week and am progressing with the build. I have read your advices and have decided to not glue the superstructure until the very end and when the camouflage painting will be completed. I am thinking to bring the superstructure at the edge of the hull, then airbrush the patterns on the hull and onto the superstructure. This way the patterns can flow better from the hull onto the structure.
I would love to post photos but am a bit dense when it comes to forums. I have some pics but can't figure out how to attach them to this thread. When I click on insert image I go to another window asking for source?? As always I am open to all yor suggestins and opinions. Be safe everyone.

The "source" line is for the URL of the photo on the photo hosting site you're using such as Photobuck or Flickr. Copy that URL and paste it in the source line and it should come up.

I'm not sure how to post a photo from Flikr, but in Photobucket you would bring up a picture that you want to post and off to the side of the photo you would choose Direct for you URL.
Copy that string and then open up your thread post, write what you want then give a space then choose Insert and choose Image. When the window comes up, paste your string into the first field and press okay.
Your picture should appear then. If you plan on posting a number of photos, I would give a space betwwen pictures.
The main issue is that you want a direct link between your photo sharing site and your post.
Hope this helps a bit. If you cannot get the photos to post from Flikr, then open a free Photobucket account. And no, I do not work for Photobucket.
It's kinda tricky but if you follow the instructional link above, you'll get your images to display in post.
Hi guys, I am almost done the model. Am painting the camouglage on the hull and the superstructure and this being my first time at airbrushing and so on, I am satisfied at 50% of my work. I will try to post photos once I am done. One thing I am finding curious a tad, is the colour XF55 deck tan used in this model appears to be off from the tan colour on the model box. Is this normal that the art depicted on the box is somewhat off from the real colour?
I have come to realize that airbrushing and patience are vertues I need work on :-)
