Type XXI submarine
Posted by GMorrison on Monday, March 21, 2016 12:49 PM

I just grabbed this on sale, plus a book.

Revell of Germany brought it out in the early 90's in it's original wartime configuration as U-2540, with a cut away hull and interior, kit 05078. She was scuttled at the end of WW2. Raised in 1957 and recommissioned with extensive modification as the Wilhelm Bauer.

It was reissued in 1993, kit 05081 without interior and the hull without the cut away. That one came with baseplates for the U-2518, U-2536 and U-3501. The former was surrendered to the French and later served in the French Navy as the Roland Morillot, including in the Suez Crisis. The latter two were scuttled at the end of WW2 and not recovered.

Reissued in 2006, kit 5004 without interior. Baseplates for U-2502, U-2514, U-2540 again, U-3501 and U-3504. All scuttled or sunk in harbor by bombing at the end of the war.

Reissued again in 2010, kit 05072 as the Wilhelm Bauer configuration as a Federal Navy research sub, with a new sprue for the different sail. That's the fine build above.

Last reissued in 2011, kit 05078 again, wartime configuration with the interior.

Wilhelm Bauer was sort of the John Holland of the Kingdom of Bavaria, 1822- 1875.

Modeling is an excuse to buy books.

Wow! Well I've got 1 of the exposed kits in stash - I'll have to take a peek and see what version. Thanks for the history!

Say GM, it looks cool and it could be a fun build. Will this be your next project?

I built the kit without the interior many moons ago.  I found the "patch" for the sail didn't fit well and the decals were like frosted Scotch Tape.  They silvered like crazy despite a gloss base and copious Micro Sol.  I wish I had Solvaset or Mr. Mark Softer back then!  Hopefully your decals will perform better.  The Type XXI is a really neat looking sub.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Philip_Holland was a pioneer in the early development of practical submarines for the US and Royal Navy. Very influential in the pre WW1 era of sub development.

Hi "G "

Riggers block is common on sail ships .I have suffered it many times .Mainly on the Constitution and the Constellation . Oh Boy ! you talk about riggers block ! Most folks don't know what we go through to build a beautiful ship , do they ?  T.B.

This model is now declared finished. It really took a beating through two moves and a year out back in the shed. But I got it out and finished her up.

Revell 1/144 Type XXI with interior. Crew from Shapeways.

I built the one with the interior "back in the day". Drove myself insane painting all the terminals on the battery's..... only to discover that you can't se any of it when it's assembled.

You'rs definatly turned out "spot on" ! This is the first time I'v seen anybody paint the Yellow "work up" / training markings.

Dont worry about the thumbprint, paint it Rust , and call it "Battle Damage"

Excellent job!  As a former submariner, I always appreciate submarine models appearing here. Yours is outstanding!

It looks really great GM, except when I enlarge it it goes upside down. It even looks good upside down. It is great to see your work. Show us more. Your interior painting looks really neat too.
