Thanks, guys, for the ideas.  I don't have an airbrush, though.  I did try drybrushing with the basic hull color, and that gave me the general effect I needed.  Thanks again,

Hi;

     Usually when I am weathering . I do this .I will add all those goodies then I take a wash of The hull color and I mean a wash .The thinner looks just slightly contaminated, shoot from about four inches at low pressure 5 # or so. Wipe gently in the appropriate direction ( Down and slightly Aft) and let it dry .You shouldn't notice anything other than a blending ( slightly ) in the coloration .

If you have an airbrush, you can overcoat with the hull color.  A double-action airbrush is best, but you can do it on a single-action brush, just dial the flow way down.  This technique also dulls down the semi-matt finish on many decals.

How do you guys tone down white hull number decals on a darker ship hull?  I've got a navy blue hull with white numbers, and they're way too bright.  Will coats of clear darken them up some?  What do you do to weather them in?  Thanks,

Jim
