I found "The Admiral" on dvd (from Amazon). I'll go so far as to call it one of the four or five best sailing ship movies I've seen - right up there with "Damn the Defiant," "Master and Commander," and "Captains Courageous." The computerized special effects are amazing.
I don't know enough about Dutch history to comment on the historical aspects. Ok, some of the computer-made ships look more realistic than others, and the big aerial shots are obviously phony. But it's an exciting and beautiful movie. My wife, who knows more about art than she knows about ships, commented that the land-bound parts looked like a trip from one Rembrandt painting to another.
I do have one small quibble. (Caveat: I don't know a word of Dutch.) The dvd version has decent English subtitles for the movie itself, but not for the bonus features - including what looks like a fascinating one about the computer graphics. Frustrating.
Anybody with any interest whatever in sailing warships or naval history GOTTA see this movie. David K, Docidle, and Steve5, I'm talking to you.
