Just a short note about my Gato. I entered it in the Modelpalooza Show here in Orlando today and won Gold in the Nautical class and Best Nautical Subject.

It doesn't surprise me,congratulations PJ.

Thanks Hokey. I use a thin pointy brush to apply the oil paint , sometimes a little thick so it looks crusty otherwise I drag the oil paint down to blend. My home made washes also act as filters.

Well PJ you've really done a nice job on this baby.  It gives me the itch to finish my version (1/3 done!). I'll ask this - is any of your rusting coming from beneath top coats (salt or masking fluid) or is it just great topical work?

Oh My !

I do love that submarine .You did a bang up job all around .The P.E. work is outstanding .

I have learned , the smaller amount of P.E. The greater chance for glaring errors . You made None . I appreciate a well done model .  T.B.

Thanks GM for the kind words. Yes a lot of brass detail on the shears had to be covered up to make it accurate for the 1943 refit look.

Trumpeter provides the modeler with a starting point and as you said, each boat became different over time after refits.

Its not apparent from his post, but;

PJ completely drilled out all of the topside and downside floodholes on this build.

Little bit, we traded One confirmation on where Gato subs were built with flood holes.

This model is the standard for accuracy in a fleet boat.

PJ even went back on a fairwater detail and covered up a lot of PE detail to make this boat look the way she came out of Mare Island.

This build is as accurate as it can be. Every fleet sub was just a little different over time.

PJ got it right.

Modeling is an excuse to buy books.

Thanks stik. Yes the black was a bit of a challenge to get tonal qualities.

The weathering says she is just about due for another yard period.  Excellent work on the fiddly PE, I gave up on mine.  Really sets off the fairwater.

1/144 Trumpeter USS Gato
Posted by plasticjunkie on Friday, May 26, 2017 2:42 PM

I just completed the Trumpy 1/144 Gato for the Submarine GB. The kit has no fit problems but it benefits from some AM details.

I used the WEM PE set for the shears and the cig deck railings. The lookout deck got some stretched sprue railings and the ones along the main deck were made using EZ Line. The stanchions got some additional details using stretched sprue.

Additional flood holes were drilled along the deck edge, stern and along the bottom of the hull. The wood stand came from Hobby Lobby along with the wood finials that were stained and polished. The grab irons were made from thin copper wire.

The 3"/50 cal and both 20mm guns are 3D printed from Shapeways. The level of detail is light years ahead of the Nautilus resin guns.

The colors used were a combination of Panzer Grey, RLM 70 and Nato Black applied in layers to show fading and discoloration on a Measure 9 scheme. Further weathering was done using artist oils and home made oil paint washes.

This is how Gato looked after her August 1943 refit at Mare Island. In Nov. 1944 she got her last refit that included upgraded guns and a cut down fairwater and a different shear arrangement.  She received the Presidential Unit Citation and 13 battle stars for service in World War II. She was decomissioned in 1946 and placed out of service till 1960 when sold for scrap. Double click on the pictures for closeups.
