You might know this, but her bottom was not coppered. It was plated in Muntz Metal, which is a brass made of a copper and zinc alloy. It has a distinctive gold color.

Yes, I was thinking of going with a color more like Brass...or maybe Brass with just a touch of copper mixed in for depth.

I wonder if I'll weather it or not?

We've pretty much hijacked poor Dave's thread. I can continue to help, but you should start a thread.

G,
Again, thank you. However, the forum won't let me in. It says that I am inactive. So, until someone there activates me I won't be able to get an education.

But you should be able to sign up.

I tried. Haven't had a reply and looking things over there was no post later than maybe June 2017.

Hmm, I just posted there. They do firewall new applications. There was a devastating hack that destroyed a lot of the older posts, including those of a late, founding member. But you should be able to sign up.

Thanks to everyone for the helpful info and advice!
I'm sure I'll be gathering resources for the next couple of months while I plan it all out....

For now, I've got the 3 sheets of George Campbell plans coming from the UK, I've got Radek's Brass PE, etc, coming from the Czech Republic, and I've got the 2-volume set of C. Nepean Longridge's Cutty Sark reference....

I'd say I'm off to a good start!

Going to order the Scaledecks wooden deck, a couple more books, and of course...several orders of line and blocks from Chuck Passaro!

Thanks again!

A Cutty Sark or, *Short Shirt* was worn by the witch Nannie who tormented and chased a man riding a mare and she clutched the mares tail hair in her left hand.

When in port a tin *Cutty Sark* was hoist and fixed to the main masthead.

One fairly good reference is: "MODELLING THE CUTTY SARK" by Edward Bowness. First published in 1959, the latest edition was produced in 1976. I bought my copy on board the Cutty Sark in '78 but, believe it or not, it's available on Amazon. My search term was: modelling the cutty sark edward bowness. Good luck and good hunting, Ray

It really is a masterful technique, and although Maurice's original intention was to furl his sails, he's pretty much making them with full detail so they could be displayed either way.

Good info.  Thanks!

Here's a photo of a Cutty Sark model, sails set, with a billowing aspect...as if the ship were under sail.  Similar in design to the above-mentioned sails, but with the difference of appearing billowed.  There are plenty of modelers who think *windblown sails* look false, but for the Fastest Clipper...I kinda like the effect.  Not saying that's what I'll do, but I think it looks really cool!

It looks to be a two volume set and V2 seems hard to find. I'm not familiar with it, although I have his Victory book. That one came with plans, the Sark ones don't sound like they do except what's illustrated in the book. Probably worth it though.

If you haven't look up Bobby Burns' "Tam O' Shanter" for a vivid description of the origin of the name and the story behind the figurehead.

Mike-

I stand corrected...the links you provided show a much more reasonable price than I found with a quick search online.  10-20 bucks is no biggie, but I saw a couple for 50-60 bucks and that seemed a little steep. lol

It occurs to me that since I built my last model ship, we've added two diabolically michievous cats to our household...I will certainly need to come up with a means of protecting my model during the construction phase, or suffer the consequences!

Also, I'm thinking of building this model with set sails....something I've done only once before.  Based on pictures I've seen online of the Cutty Sark, it can be a glorious effect, or an eysore.  To achieve the former, I'll need to make sure I explore the best methods.  That will be my primary focus for skill development this time around...IF I go that way.

Anyway, I'm still gathering resource material and making plans.  Once I get to a point of actually progressing, I'll get a new WIP thread going.

Thanks, all!

Dave

Thanks, everyone!

Rod, yes, I'm definitely going to use the wood deck, and the PE scrollwork, and AM blocks and line...

BTW, that Longridge book is SPENDY!  I'm keeping an eye out for a reasonably-priced copy

lol

Mark,

Since you mentioned it without a link I thought I'd post the link:

I'll watch it another time but I'm sure Dave appreciated your letting him know about this.

This thread is a great example of this forum's purpose!

Hello Dave,  I will try to help too.  I just ran across a show on youtube.  It is a British show called Speed Machines.  This particular episode is entitled:  Cutty Sark and the Great Clippers.  There might be some info there you can use.  Saw it and thought of you and your project.  Cheers, Mark
