Rob, I have built 7 train layouts in my life & sold my last one to a Sec. of Defense about  3 or 4 years ago. A real nice guy, he flew in from Washington & rented a big truck & we loaded it up for him & he drove home. It was a beautiful 7' x14' layout. I built it in 3 pieces & bolted it together.  At my age,  87,I was ready to just build models, loved layouts.

Fantastic Gene.

Do you have a place to show off your train layouts?

Gene,

I would airbrush the tea directly onto the sails before applying the decals.  When dry, apply a coat of fixative.  Anyway, I would also practice a little with a scrap set of sails or similar vacuform plastic to work out a technique that works best for you.

You could also try simple washes using enamel paints that won't disrupt the decals since enamels are not water based.  I would use light tans, perhaps a wask of a darker color for the creases in the sails, etc.

Rob, It is resin & stunk the whole house up. I even had barnicals on the posts in the water. I don't know about forced perspective. I did understand it once but not now. Things have a way of disapearing from your mind. This layout was 35 years ago. I had an artist do the back ground & then i used it on a bigger layout & had to paint it myself & used some prints. I just did airbrush clouds.

Bill, How do you use the tea? Do you just put it on over bare plastic or would you paint them first? Do you dip the sails in tea after you have cut them out & how long would they set in the tea. I am really interested in using tea on plastic & does it rub off? I have used it on cloth before. I had to gloss cote the sails after I painted them to put the decals on. I dullcoted them after the decals were dry 7 set.

By the way do you have one of those Tamiya scissors that have a curved cutting blade. They are great for cutting sails out.

Is that resin or plexyglass water?

Did you utilize *forced perspective* on your layouts?

Hi Bill, It is hard to believe, but I put 3 or 4 coats of paint on the sails & they are pretty dark but look whit on the pictures. I used more of a brown tint, but from now on I will trend toward a Desert Yellow. I always paint my sails & usually spray a raw umber wash on them at the end, but with the decals I didn't want to do that.

Mark those are the Imai/Ertl decals that came with the kit. I brush Microscale Decal Film on old decals so they don't come apart. Your Revell galleon is a lot bigger than my Imai. It is supposed to be 1/100.

Crackers, I would like to see that. I did a lot of water scenes on my HO layouts. This was a small but real cute one on a bigger layout. I had HO,HOn3 & HO n30 all on this big layout.

Fabulous work, Gene. Would you ever consider putting your galleon model in an ocean setting ? Finescale has several articles on how to place a model in a water diorama.

Happy modeling      Crackers   Surprise

Great job Gene! It looks absolutely beautiful! Where did you get the decals for the top two masts? I couldnt find them! My Revell has only the lower decals and I purchased cloth sails that look just like these from HiSmodel because of that. I am putting together the Soleil Royal right now and the Revell Spanish Galleon is my next build. Again, beautiful ship!

If They are coming thru here are a few more.

Now back to finish the running rigging. Then I have to choose between the Airfix Bounty & the Imai/ Mono  Susquehanna.

Gene,

They look beautiful!  The only suggestion that I have is to tone down the whiteness of the sails by using a wash. I like to use hot tea, cooled a little to avoid damage to the plastic sails.  It really gives that nice, weathered canvas look.

Yep they came through...sometimes FSM won't let images through by some sites. I had that problem  happen often to me. Galleons are very colorful vessels...the only one I ever built was the large Revell kit. Great job..your version is beautifully done. Rob

I still have lot of running rigging to do. I did what Krill said & I really appreciate his comments, & all the way from St Petersburg Russia. I have a daughter in St Pete Fla. The galleon has me more excited than anything I have built. Real fun , get one, it's worth it.

I will need 2 parts for an Airfix 1/87 HMS Bounty next & they are the main big launch & the steering wheel. They were short from the kit I bought. I will gladly pay for them.

     Thanks ,,,, Gene

OK here are the sails & they are really pretty. What do you think? By the way, if you punch the center They will blow up bigger.

Gene,

Back to your galleon . . .  I love it!  I've said it in our emails together, but I believe that this is your best yet.  Great job so far!

Rob, Get with me on the basic layout construction. I did it different on my last layout & have full picture of it. It is the only way to build a layout.

Fantastic.......I build HO and mountain railroads as well......I never got into DCC..and I used the same powerpacks as you have there.  I cast all my own rocks from real rocks using dental alginate.  I still have everything...just waiting for the right time to begin again.

Sweet layouts.....

Rob, One more as I was building it out in the garage. I did it all by myself. Made the rock molds out in Colorado & got the dirt from Santa Fe NM. I was a die hard . Loved it. Designed my own layouts too. I was good at that, because i designed houses , mostly.

Rob, If you like layouts , we need to talk. Here are a couple of 7 that built since 1957. I loved the old west & modeled it. We walked most of the Colorado narrow gauge & collected spikes. I sold my last pretty layout to a Sec. Of Defense. He flew in , rented a truck & picked it up.

I have a lot more if you are interested.

You enjoy modeling more now then ever, *Except your RR layouts*..what do you mean by that?

I love RR layouts..I built two myself over the years.  Mtn railroading and at the mid 30's time frame

Someday I will build another layout for the grandkids.

Good job on the Gallion.
