Dutch Fleet Naval Miniatures 3d Model
The Chinese PLAN Type 055 Large Destroyer in 1/350 scale
DDG--180

Launch of 1st Chinese Type 055 Large Destroyer (Crusier)

1st TYpe 055 outfitting

2nd and 3rd Type 055 launching

In 2017 the Chinese launched their first Type 055 large AEGIS-like destroyer, which is more on the order of a cruiser, displacing 12,000 tons full load.

I has 80 VLS cells, 48 forward and 32 amidships just in front of the hangar.

These are full VLS capable of carrying multiple missile types including anti-air, quad-packed anti-air, VLS launched anti-submarine rocket assisted torpedoes, cruise missiles, and anti-shipping missiles.

The vessel also has a dual hanger allowing for two large ASW helos.

There is a larger APARs than for previous PLAN designs, and the hull of the vessel displays significant stealth characteristics.

This is a modern, Chinese Tico-type cruiser.

Two more were launched in June-July of 2018, with another about to be launched bringing to four vessels within two years.  Four more are expected to follow on the heals of these and the Chinese are expected to build potentially 16-20 of these vessels while they continue producing the Type 052D DDG (which is similar to the US Flight IIA Burke DDG, of which they now have 14-16 in the water.

These vessels look to contain significant command and control spaces to guide the defense of a carrier strike grup, whose defense they were built for.

I purchased a 1/350 scale model of the vessel from Dutch Miniature on Shapways 3D Printing outlet which comes in white adn without significant detail, but with a good hull form and bridge and major deck structure and helo pad:

It was necessary to paint the vessel properly, and then add details, including sensors, photo etch railing, and amny other 1/350 scale details, some retrieved from Bronco 1/350 scale Type 052D models and others scratch built:

Adding detailed parts

Painting the vessel

Continuing to detail parts and paint

Continued detaiing and painting

Adding the flight deck decals

More details around bridge

Adding the photo etch railing and sensors:

Railing forward aroind the bridge

More railing and ladders

After railing

Comm antennae

Landing pad netting and Z-18F helo

Z-18F on pad

More details, including life bouys.

Once the ainging, detailing, photo etch, sensorss, any sratch builds, and decals were completed, it was time to show the vessel off:

And there you have it.  A 1/350 scale model of the Type 055 PLAN most capable surface vessel.  Which tyey are building very rapidly and which are extremely capable.

I am unaware of any other mdel f this vessel and would certainly buy and built a Trumpeter or other such model if it were to become availabl;e.

Hi!

Well , I have to say , they are certainly attractive warships . The Chinese are building like there's no tomorrow . Are they still engendering plans for the South China Sea ? These certainly would make things difficult .

Their technology , although probably stolen , certainly overshadows the Russians .

Hi!

Well , I have to say , they are certainly attractive warships . The Chinese are building like there's no tomorrow . Are they still engendering plans for the South China Sea ? These certainly would make things difficult .

Yes, they are.  They are building these large DDGs, which are roughly equivalent to our Ticonderoga class, though a much newer design with better stealth characteristics at the rate of four at a time...approximately four every two years.

We still have not decided on a replacement for the Ticos, though I believe a suitably modified Zumwalt with the larger radars, with at least one rail gun (of the two 155mm guns and at least one Laser Weapon System), along with additional PVLS cells, could easily fill the bill.

We simply need to move forward and modernize.  We have the designs and the technology...but the last administration canceled and held up SO much...we need our new Administration to get past that and move forward with the Flight III Burkes, the new FFG(X), the LSD(X), the Tico replacement, etc. and build them in sufficient numbers.

The Virginia Class SSN, thank goodness is moving forward and getting the Flight V boats with the SSGN capability rolling off the works is important there too.

Here's a link to a youtube video on my youtube channel showing the entire Chinese 1/350 scale Carrier Battle Group, including their new Type 055 Cruiser, two new Type 052D DDGs (roughly like our Flight IIA Burks) and two new Type 054A FFGs (which we no longer have an equivalent FFG), along with their carrier, CV-16, Liaoning.
