Airfix RMS Mauretania to Lusitania conversion
Posted by Lodni Kranazon on Tuesday, July 17, 2018 1:57 AM

Has anyone here done this? I want to get a Lusitania ship done before this coming November 11th and there are no kits availible. Even the old Entex/Gunze 1/350 kit supply has dried up and I certainly can't afford $450+ on one of those 'handcrafted' wonders! I am not looking for perfection, as long as it looks decent from a few feet away. I have some photos and this next payday will pick up a set of plans. Just wondering if anyone here has done the same. TIA

They were Sister-Ships so a converstion should be possible.  Have you checked various Photo's to see what major differences there are? The Plans will absolutly be necessary to make detailed corrections.

The Airfix Mauritania comes up for sale quite a bit. I think it's the only WWI liner available too. If you can make a good Lusitania, I bet the  Web prices on the Mauritania kit are gonna go up.  Guess I better put one on my wish list.  There is a great list of Liners available in 1/600 scale  in fact 1/600 (and 1/570) is the way to go if you want a good Plastic set of Passenger ships.

In answer to your question, I have not come across anyone who posted a conversion WIP.

It is interesting that (the Airfix kit of) "Mauretania could do double duty (with a few different parts) as the Lusitania". (Paraphrased from a JTILLY comment in 2014.)

Edit:  I forgot to add the best Build I have come across of the Mauretania.  It is  by Jim Baumann and has detailed info on corrections to the Airfix kit.

Thanks very much! I have quite a bit of Web info now so it should not be much of a problem.

RMS Mauretania is five feet longer, different propellers and her air vents are completely different from the Lusitana. Research of the two ships will really point out the differences.

Hi '

I have to "ditto" Marcus Macbean's comments here .That's like taking the Titanic and converting it to the Olympic .There are differences in length . Latter two only twenty feet , but the other well , it is easily do-able .

Lodni,

Could you start a Thread on your conversion and what you are using/doing to make corrections? Pictures a necessity please.   I am positive there would be a huge amount of interest.

   Nino

P.S.  To those interested in the Mauretania Kit, PM me as I know where a few were available Overseas for an Okay price (IMO)- even with the crappy exchange rate and shipping.

I did plan on doing that. Like I said, I am not aiming for perfection. The model will not be displayed in a maritime museum or anything. Just a display commemorating the 100th Anniversary of the end of WWI at a local VFW.  Geeked

I bought one from Squadron's scratch and dent for $10.

Building a kit from your stash is like cutting a head off a Hydra, two more take it's place.

Modelcrazy, was that for the Mauretania kit? Not bad at all.

Got in one of the references I will be using for this. I have a set of plans on order.

Yes, the 1/600 Airfix. I snatched it as soon as I saw it.
