Convert Tamiya USS New Jersey to WWII 1945 Form
Posted by Carrier Sailor on Monday, November 18, 2019 9:22 AM

Hello,

I have the Tamiya 1/350 USS New Jersey Kiit (78028). It’s the modern form with Harpoon missile launchers, CIWS guns, modern radar antennas and helo markings on the fantail.

Does anyone know how I would convert this to its 1945 WWII form? Leave the above mentioned items out and add spotter aircraft and their catapults on the fantail or what? Who makes third party parts for this?

Has anyone put together Blue Ridge Models 1/350 WWII 1945 model of the New Jersey or one of the other Iowa class battleships? How was it?

Thanks in advance.

It would probably be simpler to convert the Tamiya 1/350 WWII USS Missouri into the WWII USS New Jersey, as opposed to backdating the 1980’s fit to WWII era. That kit would include the parts needed such as catapults, 20mm & 40mm guns & tubs, etc. I think that the main difference was in the radar fit. Iowa had a different radar and bridge.

F is for FIRE, That burns down the whole town!

U is for URANIUM... BOMBS!

N is for NO SURVIVORS...

Ditto

I wouldn't bother with an era change.

No, I have never built a Blue Ride kit.

Building a kit from your stash is like cutting a head off a Hydra, two more take it's place.

Lazy has the kit and it's a project he wants to do.

I don't have advice except to say that the 3D folks are making wonderful stuff now, and Shapeways is a site that brokers stuff from multiple sources, so it would be a good idea to look there.

One of the new and really improved things in modeling. Because the printers have virtually no overhead in set-up to make, say, the flag bridge of the USS Midway in 1952 for the 1/542 Revell kit, someone wants it and sends them a CAD file, then they have that availble in any scale you please. I simplify, but it can go like that.

I do think that once you get yourself thoroughly ruined in modeling, you could consider building the WW2 version as others suggested, build your kit of the contemporary one, and display them side-by-side.

Their camouflage is quite different.
