Revenue Cutter by Blue Jacket
Posted by JohnnyK on Monday, November 18, 2019 11:58 AM

I  build model airplanes, but I may try building a ship. Has anyone built the Revenue Cutter by Blue Jacket. Blue Jacket considers it to be a starter kit. I watched the video regarding the model and i was impressed with all of the good stuff that comes with the kit. The price for the kit, $190, seems reasonable.

Semper Paratus Johnny

No, I have never built the Blue Jacket Revenue Cutter. It looks like it's a solid hull, that makes it easer, also looks like it comes with copper plating, bonus, so you don't need to try to make them yourself or settle with paint only.

Easy?...maybe not as easy as it might seem. Fun?...oh yeah, ships are a blast. Just a heads up, ships are an intense and drawn out build, requiring paintence and time. Your intrest will inevitably wain and then return. I'm not being discouraging, just honset. Don't get disapointed, when you finish, you will be extremely proud of what you've accomplished.

BTW, your little boat there qualifys in my Ships of the American Flag GB. Once entered, there is no end date, just a thought.

Building a kit from your stash is like cutting a head off a Hydra, two more take it's place.

I haven't built it but I have built some similar kits.

It would be a really good kit to start building wooden ship models with.

The BJSC kits come with everything you need, and the book and plans are awesome.

Now it looks like it only costs $ 145.00 on their site, plus shipping if you don't get the kit with paint and glue.

Not to take business away from BJ as I like them, Model Shipways has a similar little kit, the Phantom Pilot Boat.

Either one highly recommended.

Modeling is an excuse to buy books.

Blue Jacket also has what they call an "Ensign Kit" which includes the standard kit, paint, and tools for the first time builder.

Bluejacket and Model Shipways both have a good reputation - quality of materials, accurate plans, good instructions. You should take a look over on the model ship world forums- there are four build threads on the BJ kit you asked about...

If anyone does go with a Model Shipways Phantom, I highly recommend saving and referring to this copy of the Phantom Practicum by modeler Chuck Passaro - it will make your build vastly simpler, as it has tons of tips and techniques you won't find in the kit's directions. And helps you avoid several common mistakes.

Revenue cutters are great kits for novices to sailing ships.  Usually two masts, topsail schooners with minimum number of spars makes for simpler rigging.  Good starter project.  Simpler rigging means not so many lines converging on bases of masts, less existing threads to work between for securing the last lines.
