Starting to Show Up!

Hi;

   Well, as you know I live in New braunfels, Texas. Like many milder touristy but liveable destinations here in Texas we have one thing in abundance! Antique Stores and such. Now I always prowl around these places Because even though pricey, I have found models here and at the Flea Market a couple of miles away less than retail.

     So how does this relate to the title? Well,how many of you Old men and Middle Aged men and Women remember the various good brands of Battery Powered Single Prop Boat toys? I know, Not a model. Why Not?

     I have three toy boats About the same scale as the Last revell Yacht Kit. maybe a little larger. They have all been identified by visitors as " Hey? Where did you get that Sea-ray Model?". Just recently the Ringo ( Old Brand) not the new one! Had three battery powered Wood Speed-Boat toys. One with a working spotlight and running lights. The middle one with a operational ounboard motor and the last with a folding Capri Top.

     These have not been seen since the fifties. So What have you found that relates to modeling of an operational variety?

A year or so ago I went to a garage sale. The folks lived by the Carmel River and their basement had flooded. When the water receded, there was river silt all over everything.

Guy had two 2 meter glider kits that he'd started but never finished, and a little Revell plastic model kit of a glider.

I got the whole batch for $ 20, no electronics.

I talked to John Eaton about these, he explained that they were not easy to fly or learn on.

I kept them in the garage for about a year. Finally, with the silt, some damage and the added cost of electronics; I tossed the two big ones.

 Modeling is an excuse to buy books.

Some of those glider kits were for expert sailplane pilots.  Their sharp leading edge (small radius) made them stall violently, so you really have to fly then 100% of the time.  I tried starting out in RC with one like that- spun it in first flight and that was my last RC glider!

Hi Don;

     I had one when I lived in No.Cal. You are right! This thing had to be flown. It's like todays Electronics have caused airlines to re-think training. Now pilots need to fly the Airplane Before they get in the Cockpit. Just in case.

    These sailplanes were the same way. Fly or crash - No other options!.
