Hi Jim,, It is great to hear that you are all grown up. 80 is a nice grown up age. You ought to be fine at 90 because you are doing fine now. Model building has kept me busy & happy with something to do.

There are the nicest bunch of guys on this site that  I have ever seen. We need some women builders too. I stopped building about 8 years ago & a friend wanted me to build him some WW2 subs & I started again & never slowed down. I thought I had finished & I am building as much as ever or more with all I'm doing. Jim, keep at it & take care.

Great job Gene! Congrats on being able to use the "almost 90 hands" so well. Hope I'll be able to use these "80 hands" that well when I get to 90 (he said while knocking his knuckles on his head).

Guys, Thank you all for the compliments. After next month I have to start working on building models until I am a hundred. But what else have I got to do, but I don't have any more flat places to put them.

I am in the same boat.  I recently gave a 350th USS Lex to a local Navy  recruiting office.  May seek places for other completed models too.

Thanks Don. I used Spaceway Cannons because the kit ones were too big. I spent a week I think on the turret detail.

I made & drilled a new top for the anchor hole & I did the 30 degree sloped  pilot house cannon ball deflector. It was added after the big battle when the Captain got injured. I also made the new 30' tall smoke stack & air vents. Jim told mr where to drill the 12 light holes in the deck in the correct place. It seems no one gets them right. These are as right as they can be on this kit.

This is the finished model I just took yesterday with the rope rings & all the final things done.

Jim,nino is a Monitor expert & kept me straight as much as he could. He even said that the lights to the officers quarters had a slight yellow tint, so after painting them white with a toothpick & putting Microscale liquid glass in them I put a light coat of Tamiya clear yellow in them. This has been a real fun kit to buid &  nice size for detail.

Battle Axe 1/144 USS Monitor

Hi, this is my 3rd USS Monitor & it is the best yet. nino, Jim gave it to me & between warship guy & nino ,they keep me building. The Battle Axe kit is rare & was made in France. It is mainly a model of the Monitor the way it looked in the big battle between the Monitor & Virginia. I built it the way it looked after its last refit only about 10 months later. At  that time it had a lot more detail.

I always add wood to my hull before I close it up. That is to hold screws from my base. here are some pictures of the base.

The turret come in 3 pieces & is about the most time consuming work on the whole ship. I did not use the kit floor & wanted to show a wood floor so I made it out of grooved plastic sheet, 2 pieces thick.

This is the start of my turret interior. Jim & I talked about showing the drill marks that they left in the gunports in the rush to get the Monitor in combat with the Virginia. The parts I put in to show this were very small , but still overscale. My nearly 90  year old, next month ,fingers will only work so small. They show in the next picture.

This is the way I finished the turret inside.

This is the new prop & shaft & parts to carry the prop I made. Here is one picture of the Monitor as I finished it today.

A lot more to come .      Gene
