Dragon Models USS Charles F Adams DDG-2
Posted by lowfly on Monday, April 26, 2021 1:06 PM

This is a plea for assistance.  I am looking for the above kit. From what i understand it has been discontinued but my best friend served on the Henry B Wilson and i would like to build a model of his ship.  If anyone has it and is willing to part with it i would be happy to discuss purchasing it.

I believe it is in 1/700. Any help is apprciated. Thanks.

PS.  Before you say to look on Ebay or Amazon, I have and they all say that they are out of stock. My guess is that this kit has been discontinued.

The Dragon site doesn't show it discontinued. maybe they're just behind, trying to catch up with the other stock.

Steve

Building a kit from your stash is like cutting a head off a Hydra, two more take it's place.

First off, FSM isn't a sales site - trading/selling is a no go here. The Dragon Adams kit is actually a Pit-Road Skywave kit from the 1990s that Dragon acquired. A modified version of this kit was last offered last year in a slightly modified form as an Australian Perth class destroyer. It is pretty rare as well, and it would have to be worked on some to return it to a USN configuration. Dragon hasn't issued it as an Adams in 15 years or more.

Theres at least one Adams and several Perths on eBay right now. I'd say the chances of finding one in a hobby shop is about zero, and waiting for Dragon to reissue it is also unlikely. They have largely dropped out of the model business altogether the last five years or so, especially in non armor subjects. Good luck.

L'Arsenal (France) offers a 1:350 scale version as the Benjamin Stoddart in resin & brass

Iron Shipwrights also offers a resin & brass version

White Ensign Models had one, they are out of business but check the secondary market, or check with Peter Hall's Atlantic Models website.  Hall was the pattern maker for WEM and has reissued some of their kits

lowfly, make certain it has the twin arm missile launcher not the single arm launcher.

I built the first of my kits as HBW too, because I served with a couple of guys who had been Sonar Techs on that ship earlier.  The kit comes with both types of missile launcher, so you can build either the earlier or later members of the class.

If you really want to be a nit-picker, the members of the class had variations on the radar fit, with some having the more common-looking eleptical SPS-40 radar antenna.  Henry B had a rectangular antenna on the SPS-29 or 35 system.  And on the fantail, the white outlines for the helicopter unrep drop zone were shaped differently from ship to ship.  There are enough variations in the class that I thought I would build a few more of them, but there are so many other ships to build...

The original Skywave kit was waterline only, while the Dragon kit has the lower hull option too, if that matters to you.
Good luck
Rick
