More on Revell U-Boat assembly

As those of you who've gotten the Eduard's parts, have probaly noticed, the fore and after decks are somewhat oversize.
Eduard directs you to sand down the fore and after deck sections, on the kit decks, and glue the PE deck sections on top of them. When you do, you'll notice that there is overhang on the Eduard parts.
I haven't glue the hull halves together, yet, but a rough, test, fitting indicates that the over hang is not true overhang. It simple lets the PE decks reach the outer edges of the hull.
It may be that, it's going to be neccessary to sand down the hull edges, slightly. To allow the PE decks to seat snugly. Once everything is in place, sand the edges to, round them slightly, and give a smooth appearance to the edges.
If you're not using the kit decks, you'll still have to use the fore and aft deck sections. The Eduard parts are too light to use independantly. And don't cut the end of the bow section. You need the bull nose.
So don't go trimming things, till you know exactly how they'll fit. These up grades are GREAT! But they add the possible number of screw-ups, to numbers, figured in the powers of ten. Go slow and keep checking, as you go..

I just finished joining the hull halves, and am test fitting the pressure hull castings from YankeeModelWorks. One thing I did find was that one set of torpedo shutters fit much more poorly than the other set. I believe one my hull half on the side of the ill fitting shutters was somewhat flattened; as a result the lower door took some serious work to make fit.

The pressure hull pieces are very nice. If anyone is going to use one of the aftermarket decks, or (God forbid) planning on opening the plastic deck slots, these castings are required! Lots of trunk lines, hatches, etc to fill up the void in the hull that would be seen from the top and side casing slots.

I'm planning on making a tube door from some scrap to give some detail to the stern tube area. Next up is adding styrene to allow the brass deck to sit at the correct height, and adding some internal vertical bracing to the long slot above the saddle tanks to give some support and detail.

Hi Sam, I guess I was lucky, the only damaged parts were the railings on the aft of the conning tower. So far, everything else seems OK.
And, you're right about the casing supports I'm trying to find some pictures that accurately show these supports on the actual boats.
I'm still waiting for my Yankee hull tops. Your testament is most welcome.
There's also something the owners of the Nautulis decks need to know. The front end of the deck seems to be a little narrow. Some filling, between the hull and the deck, may be required. Especially if you're also using the Eduard parts. OR, the Revell deck is too wide. But, I don't think so.
Now. If this model was a US Guppy, in this scale, I'd know that I had died. And, gone to heaven. Especially with all the after market stuff.
