Ms22 for USS Montana battleship?
Posted by CBHusky on Sunday, January 9, 2005 3:22 PM
I'm not sure whether to post this here or in the General Discussion forum further down. Somebody can move it if it's wrong. Confused [%-)]

Anyway, I'm in the beginning stages of building a 1/350 USS Montana battleship for a friend using a resin hull that someone made for him. Before I get too involved in construction and such, I would like to ask what everyone's best guess would be as to what the Montana would have been painted if the ship had been constructed and been commissioned back in late WWII? Would it have possibly been the same Ms22 scheme that the IOWA's had, or would it have been something else?
Also, I only tend to work with Tamiya or Testor paints. What would be the equivalent Tamiya or Testor MM Marine colors that I would need for Ms22?

Oh, and before I forget, how well do the Testor MM Marine paints brush?

She would have worn Measure 21 or 22, but she wouldn't have had the purple-blue paint colors of 1943-44 (Navy Blue, Haze Gray), she would have worn the 1945 Neutral grays with the same color designations.

Late in the war, the USN switched back to neutral colors, determined by mixing black with white. Prior to that, from 1941 to late '44, the paints were based on mixing white with a purple blue (5-TM) tinting material.

So...Montana would have worn a neutral gray color...email me offline and I'll provide you with FS numbers.

Actually, she would most likely have worn the 1945 version of Measure 12, using #7 Navy Gray, #27 Haze Gray, and #4 Deck Gray, all of which were neutral grays. Get the USN Set 2 paint chips from Snyder & Short (http://www.shipcamouflage.com) and you can mix and match them using any model paints. We have #27 Haze Gray available in our Colourcoats enamels, and probably have the others covered as well (though I'd have to check to be sure).

Cheers,
