Well, seeing as how this is a late-war rendition, I'm going to stick with piling the deck cargo on hatches 2-5 ... besides which, I don't have enough to cover all of them, and use the resin Sherman tanks from White Ensign Models to cover the deck spaces.

But thanks, as always, for the info!

It was commonplace for No. 1 hatch to be loaded with deck cargo, although if only a few hatches were to be loaded then No. 1 would have probably been kept clear.

You're absolutely correct. No cargo was ever carried on the Number 1 hatch.

Deck cargo on Victory/Liberty ship hatches

Hopefully one of my last insane detail questions for my 1/700 Victory ship - I know the ones my Dad sailed on typically had deck cargo not only on the main deck, but also on the hatch covers as well, so I am attempting to replicate this with resin deck cargo crates, bales and drums I got from Loose Cannon Productions.

But what about No. 1 hatch, the one closest to the bow? The few photos I've found of late-war Victory ships don't show that area (naturally), but I'm guessing that nothing was put on that hatch cover because it was the most exposed to wave action and the elements. Any other info would be appreciated.
