Kinda off topic?? Hornblower Series
Posted by Big Jake on Monday, August 15, 2005 2:49 PM
Anybody have any news if A & E are going to continue the Hornblower series? I picked all the current movies earlier this year and had a Hornblower fest this weekend. It's been a little over a year now and I haven't heard a peep one way or the other.

What the scuttlebutt have to say?

Jake,

I would imagine A&E would keep trying unless Ioan Gruffudd (proper spelling according to the Internet Movie Database) is either too busy or asking for too much money as his career takes off. I think it's been a profitable venture for them so far. But if they get deeper into the series they're going to have to build a two-decker or invest in a lot of computer graphics. I just wish somebody would do a sequel to "Master and Commander," but that ain't gonna happen.

BTW, got the book in the mail today. Thanks - it's going to be helpful.

If anyone is interested I have some pics of the Grand Turk (the vessel used in the Hornblower shows) over in my Fotopic collection. I took them when she was one of the vessels that attended a Festival of Sail, here in Barrow, back in June.

here is a link.

I suppose that it would be better to have the same actor in this role than anyone else, it's not just looks, (although, my daughter who's 16, things he's the Cat's meow) It's the acting and expressions that has made this role what it is. Even failing to bring back the supporting actors would probllay hurt a bit. I felt they did nicely by expanding the roll, changing, shipmates, gun crews, adding and removing different actors to the ship roster.

I hope they continue.

I hope A&E does make more in the series. I think Ioan is very good in that role, along with the gent that plays Captain (or maybe it's Admiral now) Pelilew (-sp).

And, while it may be sacrilegious to say, and I do not wish to insult anyone/anything, I much more enjoy the A&E Hornblower then the original books. I found the Hornblower in the books to be just a wee little too introspective and, for lack of a better term, "namby-pamby" about things. And while he ended up getting things done, as they would say now, "What a drama queen!" He needed a little more Capt Aubry in him! Captain [4:-)] (which series I'm only about a third through, but, finding more enjoyable.)

Really not trying to start a "flame fest" but, smoke 'em if you got 'em. Smile [:)]

Personally, I liked Alexander Kent's "Bolitho" series.

Ditto Mike K. on Bolitho. He seems to have a blend of both Hornblower and Aubry with a little Mel Gibson in his personality

BTW, my wife has become an avid Hornblower fan thanks to the series and that she thinks Ioan is a hottie. She now has been reading all of my books and then re-reads them. She also bought the series on DVD and has become more receptive to allowing me to display more ship models in the house.

Thank you A&E for converting her to my side.
