Rumba, that pic you posted is my old boat! I was Ops Petty Officer aboard EDISTO from 94-96. She was never homeported in San Francisco, though. She started in Crescent City, CA, then moved down to San Diego, where she still is today. I have to admit, 110's are kick-a$$ boats.

Also, I've seen realized the Tamiya Pibber is nothing like the "Point" series of 82' river boats my father served on. He was on the Point League, Point Hudson, and Point Kennedy, and Point Slocum.
Any kits of such boats?

There are 110 hulls available if you want to build a bigger (RC) model.

The Yakutat was one of the Barnegat class of small seaplane tenders (AVP) that were transferred from the Navy to the USCG after WW2. I think the Unimak was the last of the class in commission- she was retired in the early-mid 1980s. A google search for "USS Yakutat" will give you a hit.

Couldn't find the Tanager, but I did find the Smilax. It was based in Brunswick, Georgia while my dad was captain, but now it's up in Atlantic Beach, NC.
Those boats sure do get around!

I noticed it is the only remaining Cosmos class ship in the fleet. I think dad said it was built in 1944 or so.

My dad was in the Coast Guard for 26 years, and I've always wanted to build a ship or two for him. All I've ever found was the Eagle (a beautiful ship!), which unfortunately, he didn't train on.
He was on Coastie Pibbers in Viet Nam, of which Tamiya makes a kit, but he says he's not interested in remembering those days!
He was also on the High Endurance Cutter Yakutat while he was there. Any models of this boat?

He was on a ship called the Tanager during the Sixties. I've seen pix of it, and it appears to be rather destroyer-like (5-inch guns, etc), like the Yakutat. Anybody know this ship or any kits that might be used to represent it?

Pop says he has some pretty good memories of those days!

He ended his carreer on the Intercoastal Waterway along the Georgia coast, on a tender called the Smilax. Anyone know this boat?

But if it's any consolation, Don, growing up I always wanted to fly a big red and white Sea King or C-130!

They are truly beautiful because they do not have a flight deck!

All USCG ships are beautiful as the helo lifts off and heads home. . . or finds the ship in the fog 10 minutes from tanks dry, 120 miles from where it was supposed to be at EMCON
(And thank you for calling those most versitile of all aircraft Helos and not choppers).

Because the USCG doesn't get the headlines. They are out there day after day doing a hard and largely thankless job and they do it so well that they are taken for granted.
They do have some beeeutiful ships don't they.
