Essex Paint scheme...1943 version

Some ships painted in Measure 21 did use countershading of 5-U white on the upper 1/3 of bulkheads & overhangs. The purpose of the countershading was to lessen the dark shadows in these areas.

Countershading was not universally applied with Measure 21.

You need to check photo references for your specific subject.

Photos of the Essex from this period show dark shadows under the overhangs and do not present evidence of countershading. Visit navsource.org for an excellent archibe of ship photos

Not true for 1943. ESSEX commissioned (IIRC) in Measure 21, which did not use countershading (the painting of overhangs in 5-U White. That practice came in when she was repainted in her dazzle camouflage, which DID use countershading.

I have seen hanger pictures that looks like white walls and grey floor. Problem is, that with an inside picture, I have no clue of the date of the photo. The Trumpeter 1:350 version has hanger deck catapult ramps on both sides and everything that I read says that CV-9 didn't have those. I'm leaving the starboard side clear, but considering that I'm doing the early 1943 measure 21 version, did the port side have the two quad mount tubs there that early?
