On the Essex theme... The Trumpeter 1:350 version has hanger deck catapult ramps
on both sides and everything that I read says that CV-9 didn't have those. I'm leaving
the starboard side clear, but considering that I'm doing the early 1943 measure 21
version, did the port side have the two quad mount tubs there that early?
I'm buying a Jane's book that will hopefully help, but I won't have that for 2 weeks.

WALLS AND FLOOR!

Bulkheads, overhead and deck!

Watch your mouth or I'll throw you out of one of those little round windows!

White (5-U) with Dark Gray decks was standard aircraft hangar decks from pre-war, through WWII to the current day.

The photo below is recent of the Enterprise's hangar deck. No, they didn't toilet-paper it, the stramers are part of a test of the foam fire suppression system.

NavyNewsstand Photo.

Note the white bulkheads and overhead

White bulkheads and overhead with dark grey deck was and still is the standard for US hanger decks. It's dark in there so the white helps the interior lighting.

Thanks for the Info ed and john. I have seen hanger pictures that looks like white walls
and grey floor. Problem is, that with an inside picture, I have no clue of the date of the
photo. Maybe white was universal for the hanger throughout the war.
Thanks again!

Thanks! As I'm currently headlong into the 1:700 DML Essex kit, this is very helpful.

Some ships painted in Measure 21 did use countershading of 5-U white on the upper 1/3 of bulkheads & overhangs. The purpose of the countershading was to lessen the dark shadows in these areas.

Countershading was not universally applied with Measure 21.

You need to check photo references for your specific subject.

Photos of the Essex from this period show dark shadows under the overhangs and do not present evidence of countershading. Visit navsource.org for an excellent archibe of ship photos

I thought I read somewhere that the overhangs of the flight deck and hanger deck
was painted white or very light gray...Is that true?
