Windows on the Island?
Posted by MontanaCowboy on Tuesday, November 8, 2005 9:14 PM
Just looking through my Trumpeter 1/350 Nimitz CVN 68, and it appears no windows are provided. Kind of wierd, I thought, considering the two PE sets for it come with wipers. What's up with that? Also, where can I get some windows or at least some clear styrene. Any tips for this kit? I will be buying some more planes for the airwing, as well as those two PE sets to replace the safety nets as well as radars, Etc. Thanks!

Clear stryrene is available from Evergreen.   Check the rotating display rack at the LHS.

Clear plastic is also available by salvaging it from the tops & bottoms of clear plastic salad bar containers from the local grocery store.

You may also want to look at Micro CrystalKleer.  This is a white-glue like substance which dries clear.  Put some on the tip of a toothpick & rub around the inside of a window opening.  Surface tension holds a film of the material in the opening.  When it dries it is clear.   IIRC, CrystalKleer can also be tinted with food coloring (i.e. to make the glass green).

Hmm, I don't recal seeing clear evergreen sheets at the LHS. I'll check again. I actually blew a bubble with future once!

you could try using Testors glue for clear parts (basically the same stuff as Krystal Kleer) or you can use Future to make the windows.

The best clear sheet made by Evergreen for windows:

Manufactured by Evergree Scale Models.

Ref No: 9005

Thickness .005" (0.13mm)

3 sheets in a pack.

This is excellent for windows and I have used it on all my large scale ship models.

I am presently building the same model of the USS Nimitz as you are.

Regards,

Beau.

Montana,

Those island windows are heavily tinted green. When backlit by the sun the green tinting is very obvious. You may want to consider backing the clear styrene with some green photo gel filters, etc.

Yes, I will be tinting them. I'll dip it in future+green food coloring
