Hull color...
Posted by DanCooper on Friday, December 9, 2005 1:04 PM
I'm currently working on Trumpeter's SSN21 Seawolf and the kit instruction call for a black upper and "hull red" lower hull.
Now, I'm not going to do the top in black but rather more very very dark grey for the scale effect, however, I have no idea what is ment with "hull red" if somebody could give me MM Enamel, Tamiya or Humbrol (of even Revell) paint number, it would be a big help for me.

On another website I found a pic of the finished model showing a very bright red, but on other pics of (other subs)  the red was much darker.

This question has been kicked around several times before on other treads. The present color of the Seawolf is overall Black. Maybe once in the yards or in it's pre-commissioning trials she wore a two tone paint job but I have seen the SSN 21 and 22 in drydock and both were in overall black.

This Seawolf kit is not very accurate.. It's a cross between a Seawolf and Virginia Class Boat???

YMW 1/350 Seawolf kit is spot on... from her nose to her Tail..

My personal favorite hull red is the Red Primer in the jumbo economy size rattlecan from Lowes.

Several other good colors include Red Zinc Oxide from the PolyScale Model Railroad colors and Mineral Red from the same line of paints.

Ok, black, pitty I would have liked more in the two-tone paintjob ah well black it is than.

But another question... Ymw ?  What's that short for ?

Yep, Krylon red primer is spot on for the red...but, alas, it seems all the boats are being done in a satin/flat black nowadays (can it get much duller?).

Go for the two tone, as it was used initially.

Well, I would prefer the two tone, but I still don't know what kind of red you're talking about Smile [:)]

Most often it is a reddish/orange color, similar to a brick color.

Recently I came across this photo of the former USS Aulick in German service.

Or it may be shaded more toward red, such as this photo of the USS Greenville in drydock after the accident in which she sank the Japanese school ship off of Hawaii

.

Regardless of the color you choose, it is your model and build it to suit yourself.

PS You also wrote about how does it stand -- notice the keel blocks along the centerline and the blocks off to the sides cradling the hull so it doesn't tip.

Well, thanks for the comprehensive information, pics and links.

I've made a decission and I'll use the two color scheme, although I know this is not accurate to the current appearance of Seawolf, but I figured that since the shape of the kit is way off, the color doesn't matter much anymore.
I've compared my hull to the one of YMW and if that one is correct, than Trumpeter's Seawolf doesn't even resemble the real thing.

Once I've finished the kit I'll put a building history of it in a new tread.
