Hull color...

Hull colour:

Most often it is a reddish/orange color, similar to a brick color.

Recently I came across this photo of the former USS Aulick in German service.

Or it may be shaded more toward red, such as this photo of the USS Greenville in drydock after the accident in which she sank the Japanese school ship off of Hawaii

Regardless of the color you choose, it is your model and build it to suit yourself.

PS You also wrote about how does it stand -- notice the keel blocks along the centerline and the blocks off to the sides cradling the hull so it doesn't tip.

  Yep, Krylon red primer is spot on for the red...but, alas, it seems all the boats are being done in a satin/flat black nowadays (can it get much duller?).

   Go for the two tone, as it was used initially.

My personal favorite hull red is the Red Primer in the jumbo economy size rattlecan from Lowes. 

Several other good colors include Red Zinc Oxide from the PolyScale Model Railroad colors and Mineral Red from the same line of paints.

This question has been kicked around several times before on other treads. The present color of the Seawolf is overall Black. Maybe once in the yards or in it's pre-commissioning trials she wore a two tone paint job but I have seen the SSN 21 and 22 in drydock and both were in overall black.

This Seawolf kit is not very accurate.. It's a cross between a Seawolf and Virginia Class Boat???
