I just noticed on Ebay one of these same Imai/Ertl/Academy kits. Apparently 1/72 scale was also used in the box art packaging.

I have build both the Imai Greek and Roman warships.I've figured there scale to be 1/90 to 1/92.Most ships of that time were not much over that.As far as accurrecy well.I've got Bjorn Landstrom book The Ship and the Imai model copies his drawings, but you'll find that a lot of Imai kits follow his drawings. The Zvezda kits I've got. I've built the Greek Triera the scale at 1/72 is pretty close.I believe beause these models have three banks of oars that is more correct.Historically all the above models are so,so.But for building a model. They are great kits good fit nice detail.Almost 90% of the people that look at your model won't know correct from not correct. Fact most will say. Hey nice Viking ship. I know for a fact on that one

ERTL appear to have released a few of the IMAI kits under their combined names, I have a ERTL/IMAI Mayflower, and I wouldn't be surprised if the Greek and Roman ships were among them.  In that case of course, 1:35 is as spurious as 1:250.  There is no way the IMAI kit could be mistaken for either!

If it's any guide the IMAI models, at 1:80 (nominal), are about 13" long.  While they don't come with any figures to act as a yardstick, I'm confident 1:80 is close enough.  After all, IMAI scaled the original  tooling so surely they must have done their homework - they are about the best.

I think the models would pass muster as 1:72 depending on how picky one was if you wanted to use them with other manufacturer's figures, etc.

The Ertl boxed versions indicate 1/35. Have both Imai and Ertl. Same kits.

I have the Academy Roman Warship and an original IMAI version and can confirm they are one and the same kit.  The IMAI was supposed to be 1:80 and appears close to that, though I haven't run a tape over the real thing to check its accuracy.  Where Academy got 1:250 from is anybody's guess (well, actually it's Academy's 'guess'!).

The Greek Warship is probably to the same 1:80 scale as far as I know since it incorporates at least one of the parts from the Roman kit.

The 'stone' structure on the Roman ships was apparently made from carved wood.

Imai/Ertl/Academyetc. Greek and Roman Galley 1/35 scale some boxes state 1/250

Are these accurate kits?

The Roman galley has a stone structure on board and no boarding ramp.

The Greek galley has a large walkaround transom at the stern.

I have seen the Aurora/Heller kit and it appears correct. 1/72-1/75. Reissued by Barcelona  Universal Modelks(BUM) with marines or sailors or soldiers.

How about the 1/72 Zveda(sic) Roman and Greek Trireme? Also there is a Roman Emperor's ship. Is this based on the Lake Ostia recovered vessels from the 1930s?

HBO's Rome has triggered this interest.

If I watched Desperate Housewives, I would be expressing interest in the neighbor's wife.

nb: I have a number of kits for sale.  Is there an online  For Sale Classifieds in the FSM forum?
