Donnie,

I bought these beads at Hobby Lobby. The first ones I tried are from Jewelry Shoppe and are 2 mm crimp beads (50 cents per package of 24 but bead stuff is half off this week!). Here is the web site from the package www.craftsetc.com The other ones I tried today are called crimp tubes and are made by Beadalon www.beadalon.com. I used the 1.3mm ones. According to the packaging they sell a crimping tool that smashes the crimp tube into a rounded shape. I have just been smashing them flat with pliers. Hmmm.....rounded might look better. I wonder how much that crimp tool costs. Half off at Hobby Lobby might be worth it.

I have to run and teach my class at the college tonight. When I get home I will take some pictures and try posting them tomorrow. Thanks for your interest!

Great!

I am glad that you can share this with us. I will keep this in mind. Can you give me the actual package details like the name of the product and manufacturing name or even product item #. This will also help and keep all the guess work out of when I go to the hobby store, I can ask for the product by actual name instead of using the term crimp beads. Even though some store helpers might know what I am talking about, it would be nice to have the other info in hand.

Again, thanks for sharing. I wish that I could see a picture of what you did.

Rigging block success

I wanted to share a small victory in case it might help some other beginning ship modelers. I was attempting to construct the spritsail topmast backstay on my Wappen von Hamburg. It is an interesting mess of line and blocks but difficult for me due to its small size. I used 32 gauge beading wire and something called "crimp beads" from the bead section of the craft store. These are very small metal beads that can be crimped closed with needle-nose pliers and hold the wire securely. I was able to run my line from the spritsail topmast to the forward stay and add the additional line from the crimp bead to represent a turn in the line in the block. After painting the crimp bead a wood color it resembled a block and I was happy with my backstay. I liked the advice on bead use I found in other postings on the site and these crimp beads were really easy for me to use.
