I second what paulnchamp said, Vermont. I used to build primarily in 1:350, but after a long layoff from building, I decided to get back into it "easy" by building a 1:700 Scharnhorst. I even fitted it out with a P/E set. I got my eyes tested about 5 years ago, and I had 20/15 vision. I don't think it is that good anymore because I had to get an OptiVisor magnifyer. Just couldn't see to do the small details anymore. But, the OptiVisor made all the difference. The Scharnhorst is coming out real nice, but it's back to 1:350 scale for me after this project.
I know what you mean about the right grey for the scale. I painted the Scharnhorst's hull and superstructure in Model Masters Camouflge grey and Gull Grey flat enamels. The paint job came out nice, but seems a bit too "bright" to me, even though it is painted in flat colors. I've been trying to find a way to tone it down a bit without ruining the paint job. Maybe a light application of Dulcoat ? I didn't know that acrylics went down "flatter". I'll have to check it out.
