Thanks for that.  I checked out Mission Models and they sell Blacken-it for about $6-7, that's OK but $55 for postage - you've got to be kidding!!!!  Serves me right for living on the arse-end of the world I suppose........

Yes, look for Blacken-It, sold at most well supplied model railroad hobby shops.   It chemically blackens/tarnishes metals.

Blackening brass and steel

I'm looking for advice on how to blacken items formed from brass or steel wire.  This is not for a ship incidentally, but for a farm cart model.  I want to make the parts look like blackened iron and then make them look 'rusty'. 

I've read there are chemical solutions that can be used, is there anything available commercially?
