Bismarck questions
Posted by inpw1 on Tuesday, September 26, 2006 2:33 PM

I'm getting ready to build the Tamiya Bismarck kit for someone, and was wandering if there are any problems with the kit? Fit, acuracy, any little things that I might not notice (I dont usually build ships)? I also picked up the Toms Model Works PE set for it to help fix railings and things, Does this set have any problems of funny quirks that I should know before I start?

Any help would be apreciated.

thanks

jim

I have that kit as well (haven't started on it yet though) and while doing my research I ran across this site that might be helpful to you.  Smile [:)]

I have built that ship and in fact all the Tamiya 1/350th ships, and have used GMM photo etched, as Loren Perry does an outstanding job on them however for some reason I didn't use P/E on my Bismark. I built it in 1996, I think.

The Tamiya ships are remarkably clean moldings. The only thing to be careful on is the deck in order to avoid  seam lines when gluing to the hull. Its a great model and looks fantastic. I used one of  the Supserscale swastika decals for the bow.  There is also no lack of material or photos on the Bismark.. You'll want to build another Tamiya ship when your done.

I appreciate how clean the Tamiya ships are as I am now building the Revell CSS Alabama and it is molded quite badly. Many hours of cleaning.  I will try to post a picture of my Bismark.

Good luck

Have only dry fitted the deck on mine, but found large gaps that could be a pain to fill without losing detail on the deck. No doubt something to do with the deck being removable for motorising it.

If you fit both the bow & stern deck sections tight against the bow & stern, when you come to drop the centre section in, you will have a gap of a few mm each side which doesn't look fun to fill. I am probably going to butt them all up tight against each other, running from the bow & leave a single larger gap to fill at the curvature of the stern. I accept that the rear turrets may be a few scale feet too far forward, but I will take this for the easier fill.

One other thing with the kit is that Tamiya missed a lot of detail off of the superstructure decks. Maybe have a look at White Ensign Models. They do photoetched deck plates to detail the superstructure.

I did bought that same kit and I just ordered the Tom's modelworks PE set as well.  Does anyone knows if there is a review on the PE set or where can we find a copy of the instructions on the net?
No matter where you go ....... there you are.

Hi David,  I have the White Ensign Models PE sets (AA guns, details/railings, and the superstructure deck set).  The Superstructure set looks really nice, if you like I can try to snap a photo of it and post it when I get home so you can see what they look like, unless you find a better shot online in the mean time.

Thanks, but I should be OK. I have seen the deck plates & a review of them online (might have been at modelwarships.com). Have had a few White Ensign etch kits in my time & I rate their products & their service highly.

Am currently working on the Tamiya 1/350 HMS Prince of Wales at the time of the Denmark Strait action. it's about 60% complete, but I have got stalled on it & haven't touched it for months. Am using White Ensign's KGV photo etch kit, their resin UP launchers and thier Colourcoats enamels. Have got Trumpeter's Hood & the Tamiya Bismarck waiting in the wings. All I need know is someone to release a 1/350 Prinz Eugen. Come on Trumpeter, you know you wanna!

Thanks for all the help, I was actually contemplating building a wood deck for it. The fit problem of the main deck, and lack of detail on the upper decks is probubly going to encourage me to do so. I haven't built many ships, most when I was a kid, but I usually dont shy away from getting in way over my head.Any other advice will be apriciated, and thank you all for responding
