Revell vs. Revell-Germany Gato
Posted by rcboater on Sunday, October 8, 2006 9:41 PM
I was looking on the Tower Hobbies website, and saw the following:

Revell 1/72 Gato class sub, $75, available mid-November.

Revell-Germ any 1/72 Gato class sub, $92, available October.

It just struck me as odd- that the same kit is available in both boxes at the same time.  (But not as odd as the case where the R-G version of the 1/96 USS Constitution was almost twice the cost of the US box.)

Are the kit contents exactly the same?

The different boxings probably have something to do with Revell of Germany (Revell AG) being sold by Mother Revell (Revell-Monogram).     Revell AG was sold to an investment group comprised of its senior management.   Separate companies mean separate marketing and separate price structures.

Revell-Monogram says

The Gato class of submarine was the state of the art in American design at the start of World War II and bore the brunt of the fighting against Japan during the war. They were fast, strong, heavily armed and well-suited to the long range patrols necessary in the Pacific. They were generally over 300 feet in length, which means our new Revell 1:72 scale kit will be roughly 52 inches in length! While still being tooled, you can expect a massive, world-class model replica with at least 250 to 300 parts. Expected release date will be November '06.

05047 American Submarine GATO-class

GATO Class: Enormous Range and Heavy Armament

The GATO class submarines were one of the most successful weapons systems of the U.S. Navy during WW II.

In addition to its long range and seaworthiness it was principally characterised by its heavy armament: 10 torpedo tubes, a 12.7 cm gun and a 4 cm flak anti-aircraft gun.
